WASTE MANAGEMENT POLICY

PURPOSE

The Waste Management Policy provides a framework for effective waste management at the Macao Polytechnic University. This policy aims to minimize waste generation and plastic use, provide guidelines for the proper disposal of general waste and hazardous waste, promote recycling and reuse, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, thereby contributing to the University's sustainability goals.

POLICY STATEMENT

USE MINIMIZATION OF PLASTIC AND DISPOSABLE ITEMS

All internal units, contractors and outsourced service providers work together to minimize the use of single-use plastic and disposable items.

Minimization of Plastic

The most commonly used plastic includes straws, bags, cups, food containers, cutlery and bottles. For catering services, disposable utensils and plastic bags will be charged and will only be provided upon request, encouraging diners to bring reusable utensils and containers. Drinking fountains are installed around campus to encourage users to bring their own water bottles. The Catering Service Workgroup monitors caterer’s operations and impose environmental-friendly policies where possible. These minimization policies extend to the campus’ outsourced services, outsourced suppliers and supply chain.

Minimization of Disposable Items

The following ‘go green’ tactics are adopted for reducing disposable items:

  • Substitute printed materials with electronic ones by publishing on the University’s official website, online learning platforms, e-registration systems, e-document databases, social media and other electronic formats.
  • Avoid excessive packaging when goods are delivered.
  • Rethink and limit the production of souvenirs and gifts.
  • Encourage utilising cool air jet hand dryers instead of paper towels.

These minimization policies extend to the campus’ outsourced services, outsourced suppliers and supply chain.

WASTE DISPOSAL AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

All units and departments are responsible for ensuring the safe and proper disposal of waste, in accordance with health and safety standards. These policies also apply to the University’s outsourced service providers, with relevant terms and conditions included in their contracts.

The following principles outline the ethical responsibilities for environmental practices regarding waste and resource management:

  • Review the necessity of purchases before acquiring materials or assets.
  • Refurnish and reuse resources through a transfer mechanism and made available to other university units.
  • Implement effective management of recycling bins on campus for paper, plastic, cans, and batteries to promote recycling initiatives.

The amount of waste generated, recycled, and sent to landfill shall be measured across campus in order to evaluate the performance of waste disposal and management on campus.

General Waste Disposal

  • Daily solid waste is centrally collected and measured before moving to the appropriate garage stations. An annual report is performed to measure the total amount of waste generated, total amount of waste recovered, and the recycling rate.
  • Waste oil and grease must be removed from grease traps and properly disposed of according to the legal requirements to reduce pollution. The Catering Service Workgroup oversees the properness of the grease trap installation and the disposal process.
  • Recyclable materials will be placed in classified recycling bins and collected by designated recycling companies.
  • Construction waste generated from renovation and construction works within campus must be handled according to the legal requirements stipulated in the Framework on Construction Waste Management (Administrative Regulation No. 22/2020), ensuring the properness of the disposal process.
