Macao Polytechnic University and Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine held a symposium on "Artificial Intelligence and Drug Discovery"

Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery (AIDD Centre) at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Macao Polytechnic University, and the Haihe Laboratory of Modern Chinese Medicine at Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly organized a symposium titled "Artificial Intelligence and Drug Discovery." The symposium, held on the campus of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, brought together experts to discuss the profound applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) research and development.

Distinguished attendees included Director Tong Hoi Yee, Associate Professor Li Kefeng, and Lecturer Li Shu from the AIDD Centre at Macao Polytechnic University, as well as Mr. Wang Yi, Secretary of the Party Committee at Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mr. Zhang Junhua, Executive Deputy Director of the Modern Traditional Chinese Medicine Haihe Laboratory, Mr. Wang Yuefei, Director's Assistant at the same laboratory, Mr. Li Zheng, Dean of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmaceutical Engineering.

The symposium focused on the applications of artificial intelligence in various areas, including drug discovery, new drug design, production and manufacturing, clinical diagnosis and treatment, evidence-based evaluation, and big data analysis. The experts delivered insightful presentations and engaged in profound discussions, exploring how modern scientific technologies, particularly AI, can advance the modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This includes upgrading TCM diagnostic techniques, accelerating research and development of new TCM medicines, implementing intelligent manufacturing processes, and enhancing the provision of high-quality TCM services.

Following the symposium, the AIDD Centre team visited Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine's National Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Composition and the Modern Traditional Chinese Medicine Haihe Laboratory. During these visits, they gained valuable insights into the university's utilization of big data in TCM-related resources and its advanced pharmaceutical research equipment.

In the afternoon, the AIDD Centre team conducted an extensive inspection at the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In discussions with Mr. Fan Guanwei, Vice President of the hospital, and Mr. Qin, Director of the Radiology Department, they delved into the topic of AI-driven medical big data analysis. If research agreement can be materialized between the two universities, there will be deep collaboration in the analysis of the hospital's annual dataset of 100,000 health checkups. The collaboration aims to produce high-level research papers, actionable outcomes and translational medical researches.
