Macao Polytechnic University Delegation Explores Collaborative Research Exchange with Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention

In order to promote the development of the biopharmaceutical industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a delegation led by Tong Hoi Yee, the Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery (AIDD) at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), along with academic leader Liu Huanxiang, visited the Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on August 23rd. They engaged in in-depth discussions regarding scientific research project collaboration.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Mei Wenhua, the Party Secretary of Zhuhai CDC, as well as by Huang Liqun, the Deputy Director, and Huang Huitao, the Director of the Microbiology Laboratory. Guided by Deputy Director Huang Liqun, the delegation visited Zhuhai CDC, followed by an in-depth exchange and discussion between both teams.

During the meeting, Party Secretary Mei Wenhua delivered a welcoming speech, expressing appreciation for the achievements of MPU in recent years. He provided a brief overview of the center and proposed a comprehensive cooperation policy of 'innovation, openness, collaboration, sharing, and win-win,' expressing the intention to collaborate with MPU. Director Tong Hoi Yee sincerely thanked Zhuhai CDC for their warm welcome and introduced the development and mission of the Centre for AIDD at MPU. He also proposed potential areas of collaboration and expressed a willingness for long-term cooperation.

Following that, Professor Liu Huanxiang delivered an excellent academic presentation, focusing on the methods of AIDD and its applications in certain disease areas. She proposed an approach to drug discovery based on AI and introduced the research platform for AIDD at MPU. Additionally, Professor Guo Jingjing and Associate Professor Li Kefeng provided detailed introductions to their research achievements, which received unanimous recognition from colleagues at Zhuhai CDC.

In addition, Deputy Director Huang Liqun provided a comprehensive overview of Zhuhai CDC, including talent development, institutional functions, development history, and research and teaching aspects. She emphasized the ongoing construction of the 'Zhuhai Bio-Safety Level 3 Laboratory and Disease Prevention Capacity Enhancement Project' at the center, which has been included in the national plan for high-level bio-safety laboratories in the 14th Five-Year Plan. Furthermore, Director Huang Huitao of the Microbiology Laboratory and Associate Director Ling Li of the Physical and Chemical Testing Laboratory offered detailed introductions to their respective departments.

Finally, under the guidance of Deputy Director Huang Liqun and Director Huang Huitao, the delegation visited the laboratories of Zhuhai CDC. They conducted an on-site inspection of the laboratory environment and the high-precision instruments at the center. The delegation expressed a strong affirmation of the center's research capabilities.

The exchange between the delegation from MPU and Zhuhai CDC has laid a solid foundation for future cooperation between the two parties. Furthermore, it has significantly advanced the development of Industry-University-Institute collaboration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, thereby contributing to the high-quality development of the region and the nation.

The exchange was attended by several individuals, including Zhu Kejing, the Director of the Science and Education Management Department at Zhuhai CDC, Lin Yixiong and You Dongling, Deputy Directors of the Microbiology Laboratory, and Liang Sudan, Deputy Director of the Physical and Chemical Testing Laboratory. Additionally, Dr. Zhang Yan and others from Zhuhai CDC took part in the exchange. Representing MPU, Lecturer Zhang Qianqian and doctoral students Luo Qing, Zhai Xiaobing, and Zhao Likun from the Centre for AIDD were also active participants in this exchange.
