CHIN1123 Modern Chinese 3 45 hrs ---
Translation is an exchange between two languages and Modern Chinese has a prominent
place and role in the curriculum. As a subject in linguistics, this module covers the basic
theories and knowledge of modern Chinese by providing an overview and an introduction
to its vocabulary, grammar, rhetoric, etc. The module also offers training with the practical
application in these aspects with a view to enhancing students’ practical Chinese language
skills and theoretical literacy in linguistics.
COMP1103 Information Technology 3 45 hrs ---
In a society with increasingly globalized knowledge, it is crucial to equip students with
digital skills that enable them to understand Communication Technologies (“ICT”) as
useful and effective working tools. It intends to explore the main concepts in the field of
ICT in terms of both hardware and software. An introductory approach will also be made
to some current technological tools that will give practitioners knowledge and ability in
the manipulation of applications that maximize their productivity.
ENGL1121 English Reading I 3 45 hrs ---
The primary focus of this module is to improve students’ English proficiency from
intermediate (B1, B2) to high-intermediate (B2) level, particularly in the skills of reading
supported with discussions of grammar usage. The intent of the syllabus is to help solidify
students’ ability to read and understand narrative and expository passages, and to analyze
the contents critically and the text stylistically. Student’s proficiency in the English
language is imperative to their ability to translate between the English and Chinese
languages.
