Translation
This module aims to enhance students’ cross-cultural awareness and
pragmatic/communicative competence. Central topics include basic concepts and
discipline features of cross-cultural communication, factors affecting cross-cultural
communication including both linguistic and non-linguistic factors such as different social
structures, beliefs, and values, etc., the major research methods and paradigms used in
the field, as well as the relationship between competence development of intercultural
communication and practice of translation and interpretation.
TRAN3119 English-Chinese Consecutive 4 60 hrs ---
Interpreting
This module is a compulsory course for third-year students. It aims to provide higher-level
training in consecutive interpreting for those who have already obtained the knowledge
of interpreting. Through the teaching of English-Chinese consecutive interpreting
strategies and high-intensity training of related skills, students will fully understand the
rules of consecutive interpreting from English to Chinese, and enhance their ability in
note-taking, cognitive effort allocation and use of working memory, so as to further
improve their overall ability in consecutive interpreting.
TRAN3120 Chinese-English Consecutive 4 60 hrs ---
Interpreting
This module aims to provide higher-level training in consecutive interpreting for those
who have already obtained the knowledge of interpreting. Through the teaching of
interpreting strategies and high-intensity training of related skills, students will fully
understand the rules of consecutive interpreting from Chinese to English. By using the
most up-to-date interpreting materials, students will understand the corresponding
background knowledge and accumulate English expressions of the terms with Chinese
characteristics, and develop agile responses and cultivate good psychological qualities.
While strengthening their skills in interpreting, the module will also provide a solid
foundation for them to enter the next stage of simultaneous interpreting.

TRAN4123 Simultaneous Interpreting 6 90 hrs ---
This learning module is intended to introduce students to the essential knowledge and
practical skills of simultaneous interpretation (SI). Through intensive training, students will
develop a fundamental understanding and basic techniques of SI in various subject areas,
preparing them for conference interpreting in both E-C and C-E modes.
