                 ENGL1122    English Reading II                3       45 hrs    ---
                             The primary focus of this module is to reinforce students’ English proficiency at the high-

                             intermediate (B2) level, particularly in the skills of reading supported with discussions of
                             grammar usage. The intent of the syllabus is to help solidify students’ ability to read and
                             understand narrative and expository passages, and to analyze the contents critically and
                             the text stylistically. Student’s proficiency in the English language is imperative to their
                             ability to translate between the English and Chinese languages.
                 ENGL1123    English Listening and Speaking        3   45 hrs    ---
                             Being able to communicate your ideas and opinions effectively is a vital skill in all academic
                             study. To be able to do this in a second language is central to the study of Language and
                             Translation.  The  course  focus  is  on  developing  students’  accuracy  and  fluency  in  oral
                             communication  skills.  Activities  are  designed  to  integrate  listening,  speaking,  and
                             pronunciation practice. Students will be required to complete a variety of listening and
                             speaking tasks and exercises in class and beyond class.
                 ENGL1124    English Writing                   3       45 hrs    ---

                             This course aims to enhance  students’ English writing skills  through the teaching and
                             practice of choosing right words, making sentences, polishing paragraphs, and organizing
                             essays. Through a thorough introduction to the textual parts including title, introduction,
                             body,  and  conclusion,  the  students  are  guided  into  different  genres  as  exposition,
                             descriptions, narrations, and argumentation. It is expected that through the study of this
                             course, students are expected to master the basic English writing skills, and hence being
                             able to write effectively in assignments and tasks in other academic subjects.
                 ENGL1125    Advanced English Grammar          3       45 hrs    ---
                             This  module  offers  a  concise  description  of  the  grammatical  structures  of  Modern
                             Standard  English.  It  covers  core  topics  of  English  grammar,  such  as  words  and  their
                             inflectional forms, word classes and phrases, grammatical functions and semantic roles,
                             argument structure and valency, types of clauses, tense and aspect, mood and modality,
                             etc. If time permits, the module will also cover more specialized topics, such as lexicon
                             and grammar, and distributional properties of grammatical forms.

                 HIST1110    Chinese History and Culture       2       30 hrs    ---
                             This course aims to give an overview of the History and Culture of China and to give

                             students knowledge about the political, economic and cultural development of ancient
                             and modern China. On the other hand, it is intended to show, generically, political and
                             economic relations between China and the rest of the world. The history of Macau, as an
                             important part of the exchange between China and the western world since the 16th
                             century, will also be presented.
