                 LLAW1110    Constitution and Basic Law        2       30 hrs    ---
                             This module introduces the general principles, the state system, the state organs, and the

                             fundamental  rights  and  duties  of  citizens  stated  in  the  Constitution  of  the  People’s
                             Republic of China (the Chinese Constitution). It also covers the formulation of the “One
                             Country,  Two  Systems”  policy  and  the  Basic  Law  of  the  Macao  Special  Administrative
                             Region of the People’s Republic of China (the Macao Basic Law) and such sections in the
                             Macao Basic Law as the relationship between the Central Government and the Macao
                             Special Administrative Region (SAR), the political structure of the Macao SAR, and the
                             fundamental rights of Macao residents. The module is aimed at assisting the students to
                             establish a correct understanding about the Chinese Constitution and the Macao Basic
                             Law,  and  to  identify  the  basic  concept  of  the  legal  protection  of  people’s  rights  and
                             freedoms.
                 SOCI1112    Sustainable Development           2       30 hrs    ---
                             The learning module aims to enable students to understand global developments and
                             relevant trends as well as concepts of sustainable development in relation to promoting
                             economic  growth,  protecting  the  environment  and  addressing  community  needs  in
                             education,  health  and  social  security.  Students  will  be  able  to  identify  and  recognize
                             factors contributing to sustainable development in the environmental, socio-economic
                             and other domains with a strong sense of global citizenship.
                 TRAN1111      Introduction to Translation     3       45 hrs    ---
                             This introductory module aims to familiarize students with the understanding of the basic
                             terms and concepts in translation, such as the nature, process, standards and ethics of
                             translation. Students are expected to know the basic techniques involved in translation
                             and interpreting, and achieve a general understanding of the translation history in China
                             and  in  western  countries.  The  successful  completion  of  this  course  will  lay  a  good
                             foundation for students to learn future translation-related courses.

                 ENGL2108    Introduction to Linguistics       3       45 hrs    ---
                             This module provides students with an overview of basic concepts and theories in general

                             linguistics,  including  phonetics  and  phonology,  morphology,  syntax,  semantics,
                             pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. After completing the module, students will have a basic
                             knowledge  and  understanding  of  design  features  of  human  language  and  linguistic
                             theories, which will allow them to discuss and explain basic concepts and theories in core
                             branches of general linguistics.
                 ENGL2109    Advanced English I                3       45 hrs    ---

                             With  the  foundation  built  in  the  first  year,  this  module  (Advanced  English  I)  aims  to
                             consolidate and further enhance students’ reading and writing skills. It is built around the
                             idea that writers learn by reading. Carefully abridged and adapted works are selected to
                             exemplify various topics on grammar and vocabulary in context as well as reading and
                             writing techniques. The works presented in this module range from the Intermediate Level
                             at the beginning of the semester to the Preliminary Advanced Level towards the end of
                             the semester. Proficiency will be promoted through immersion in exemplary language use.
