                             Literature
                             Modern and Contemporary Chinese literature since the New Culture Movement in the

                             early  20th  century  is  the  inheritance  and  innovation  on  the  basis  of  ancient  Chinese
                             literature. It is also a witness and product of the modernization of China. Starting from the
                             publication of “A Preliminary Discussion of Literature Reform”    by Hu Shi on the fifth
                             issue of the second volume of New Youth in January 1917    to the early 21st century (as
                             far  as  Macao  literature  is  concerned),  this  module  briefly  outlines  the  occurrence,  ,
                             development, and prosperity of literature modernization in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong
                             Kong, and Macao over the past century, as well as an overview of novels, poetry, prose,
                             and drama. It aims to guide second-year students majoring in Chinese-English translation
                             to understand and grasp the distinctive characteristics of contemporary Chinese literature
                             and the historical experience it provides for promoting the integration of Chinese and
                             world literature. The module focuses on important writers and classic works that have
                             contributed to the hall of Chinese and even world literature.

                             In social life, practical documents are used to transmit information, handle various affairs,
                             and  regulate  people's  behavior.  They  are  indispensable  in  business  management  and
                             public  administration  in  the  modern  society.  As  a  compulsory  course  for  translation
                             majors,  this  module  is  comprehensive  and  practical  in  nature.  On  the  one  hand,  it
                             elucidates basic theories, related knowledge,  basic  skills, and writing requirements of
                             various practical documents, emphasizing the cultivation of students' practical writing
                             ability with theory as the guide and genre writing as the focus.
                 ENGL2117    Public  Speaking  and  Presentation  in  2   30 hrs   ---
                             English

                             This  module  walks  students  through  different  stages  of  speech  and  presentation
                             preparation and delivery. Students will analyze the communication needs, process and
                             audience  of  various  simulative  scenarios  and  accordingly  conduct  research  before
                             developing speeches in a logical manner. Students also learn to use different presentation
                             technologies,  verbal  and  non-verbal  communications  to  enhance  speeches  and
                             presentations. Students also get to evaluate the speeches of their peers based on set
                             criteria.

                 ENGL2118    Practical English Writing         2       30 hrs    ---
                             This  module  is  designed  for  students  to  improve  their  writing  skills  for  business  and
                             professional purposes. Emphasis will be put on developing students’ ability to write in
                             English,  to  analyze,  criticize  and  improve  each  piece  of  writing  according  to  common
                             standards of business and professional writings. Students will have the opportunity to
                             practice  writing  notes,  notices,  applications,  reference  letters,  personal  statement,
                             reports, minutes, memorandums, etc.
