ENGL3110 Selected Readings in English Literature 2 30 hrs ---
This module, though its title promises scope, is by its very nature selective. It proposes to

open a view for students on some of the more eminent writers writing in English since the
Second World War. The aim is therefore not to examine specific national literatures in
depth, but to expose the student of English to a wider range of fine writing composed in
English in its different national varieties. Apart from a minority of major writers from the
‘centre’, i.e. the Anglo-American world, weight will be given to those from the national
and ethnic ‘periphery’, such as J.M. Coetzee, Derek Walcott, Brian Friel as well as emerging
                             or established ‘ethnic’ writers.

                 HIST3100 History of Western Civilization 2 30 hrs ---
This module aims to enable students who do not have a European cultural background to
learn about the major people, events and concepts in European culture. It aims to
familiarize the students with the basic cultural vocabulary and to assist the students in
their understanding that language is only one of the channels of understanding culture,
based on which they may participate in cultural conversations and know of the basic
cultural knowledge, including the historical figures such as Charles Dickens, Sigmund
Freud, and Pablo Picasso; historical events such as the Industrial Revolution and the Wars
of Napoleon; and concepts such as rationalism, psychoanalysis, and Cubism.

                 TRAN3118 Scientific and Technical Translation 2 30 hrs ---
This module aims to familiarize students with the stylistic features of EST (English for
Science and Technology) texts, expand their domain-specific and general vocabulary, and
enhance their lexicological, lexicographical, and terminological competence to fulfill
practical EST translation tasks related to a wide range of scientific domains. The course
focuses on the stylistic features of EST texts and translation techniques, using a
combination of lectures, discussions, and translation practice sessions. The aim is to
provide students with a better understanding of the principles and methods of translation,
as well as the challenges and solutions involved in it.

                 TRAN4128 Translation for Health Industry 2 30 hrs ---

This module aims to equip the students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work
as translators in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. Students will learn essential
vocabulary and terms as well as practical translation skills in clinical, community and
corporate settings. Special attention is paid to the English translation of traditional
Chinese medicine (TCM) terminology, in support of Macao’s economic policy to boost the
development of the big health industry that takes research, development and
manufacturing of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as its core.

                 TRAN4129 Financial Translation 2 30 hrs ---

This module aims at familiarizing students with key financial terms and the characteristics
of a variety of financial texts and equipping them with the basic knowledge and
techniques in handling the translation of these texts. Through a comparative study of
English and Chinese parallel texts and ample practice in English-Chinese/Chinese-English
translation, students will develop their writing and translation skills required in finance-
                             related professions.
