ENGL2110 Advanced English II 3 45 hrs ---
With the foundation built in Advanced English I, this module (Advanced English II) aims to
consolidate and further enhance students’ reading and writing skills. It is built around the
idea that writers learn by reading. Original works are selected to exemplify various topics
on grammar and vocabulary in context as well as reading and writing techniques. The
works presented in this module range from the Preliminary Advanced Level at the
beginning of the semester to the Advanced Level towards the end of the semester.
Proficiency will be promoted through immersion in exemplary language use.
PORT2135 Portuguese I 2 30 hrs ---
This module aims to cultivate students' ability to express themselves orally and in writing
in Portuguese by introducing the basic language rules of the Portuguese language.
PORT2136 Portuguese II 2 30 hrs ---
This subject aims to cultivate students' ability to express themselves orally and in writing
in Portuguese by introducing the basic language rules of the Portuguese language.
TRAN2111 General Translation: English-Chinese 6 90 hrs ---
This module is designed to familiarize students with the major differences between
English and Chinese, and the basic techniques of translating from English into Chinese.
Students are exposed to extensive translation practices and in-depth discussions on
translated texts of different genres at different levels, in order to further develop their
practical translation techniques and develop their critical thinking on translated texts from
the perspective of translation techniques. This course prepares students for more
specialized translation modules.
TRAN2112 General Translation: Chinese-English 6 90 hrs ---
This module is designed to familiarize students with the major differences between

TRAN2113 Introduction to Interpreting 3 45 hrs ---
This module is designed to teach students the basic concepts of interpreting and to
develop their basic qualities required for interpreting, including interpreting principles
and skills, language and cognitive skills required for interpreting, understanding the needs
of new industries, and fundamental skills for sight and consecutive interpreting. The
module selects bilingual materials on a variety of topics to train students’ core skills of
interpreting and to prepare them to communicate between Chinese and English cultures,
so as to open the door to their interpreting career.
TRAN2114 Computer-Aided Translation 2 30 hrs ---
This module aims to enhance students’ translation productivity and competence by
providing them with basic training in computer-aided translation (CAT). Topics to be
covered in the module include various CAT tools and resources, and the evolution of the
translation service industry.
