Macao Polytechnic University celebrates International Translation Day

Teachers and students of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University organized an online event to celebrate the International Translation Day. The theme of this year's International Translation Day is "A World Without Barriers", emphasizing the key role of translators in facilitating the interconnection of different cultures and languages in the world. Under the new epidemic, it is important to use technology to connect with the world in order to maintain social distance while keeping up with the times, so that translators can play their role as communicators, coordinators, and intermediaries.

International Translation Day is celebrated on the birthday of Saint Jerome. Saint Jerome, the translator of the Latin text of the Bible, has always been regarded as the patron saint of translators and interpreters. In her speech, Lili Han, Director of the Faculty of Languages and Translation, urged students to follow the spirit of Saint Jerome, not only to be a communicator and a servant of language and culture, but also to highlight the subjectivity of being a translator, to have a big heart, to build a bridge between people's hearts and souls, and to make the world free of barriers.

At the celebration, four teachers from the Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation program, Portuguese Language program, Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation program, and International Chinese Language Education program presented the topics of "The Past Life and Present Life of Translation", "Translation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence", "The Image of Interpreters on the Screen", and "Translation and the Communication of Chinese Literature" respectively, providing an insight into translation activities from different perspectives, and leading the students to understand the development of translation from multiple perspectives, both in the past and in the present. In this event, master students of Chinese/Portuguese Translation and Interpretation program and Chinese/English Translation and Interpretation program performed Chinese/Portuguese and Chinese/English simultaneous interpretation, and doctoral students of Portuguese program served as the master of ceremonies.

The Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University is the cradle of translators in Macao. It is committed to providing a diversified learning environment and resources for students, and to nurturing talents with a global perspective and excellent translation skills for the Macao community and the motherland.
