To strengthen cultural and artistic education cooperation between Macau and mainland China, a delegation from Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) visited the National Art Museum of China, where they received a warm reception from Wu Weishan, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of the    China Democratic League, and Director of the National Art Museum of China. Wu Weishan is a celebrity in contemporary Chinese sculpture, whose reputation, design works, and outstanding achievements have placed him among the world’s top artists. Wu Weishan and MPU have a deep-rooted connection, and both parties reviewed the results of their past collaborations and their deep friendship, engaging in an in-depth discussion in a pleasant atmosphere on bringing Chinese art and culture to the world and to Portuguese-speaking countries.

Wu Weishan warmly welcomed the delegation from MPU, pointing out that Chinese art should highlight creativity, emphasise national characteristics, and be innovative in fields such as painting and sculpture. He reviewed the process of telling China’s story through unique sculpture works, deep-rooted in the cooperation between Chinese traditional culture and Macao. The curatorial philosophy of the National Art Museum of China, demonstrated by its efforts in promoting traditional Chinese art and culture, has elucidated the relationship between Chinese art and culture and their global reach, leaving a profound impact.

Vivian Lei, Vice-Rector of MPU, congratulated the National Art Museum of China on its contributions to promoting Chinese art and culture worldwide and in Portuguese-speaking countries, expressing gratitude to Wu Weishan for his long-term support of MPU. She noted that art’s influence transcends borders and that culture facilitates exchange and cooperation among Belt and Road countries. She expressed hope for strengthening collaboration between MPU and the National Art Museum of China in the fields of artistic creation and design so that the university could cultivate more high-quality artistic talent in Macao and support the global dissemination of Chinese art and culture.

Wu Weishan’s sculptures are showcased worldwide, including the statue of Confucius in the lobby of the Meng Tak Building at MPU. To promote Chinese culture, MPU has established the “Professor Wu Weishan Sculpture Studio”, which presents Wu’s exquisite sculptures to visitors from around the world to promote the Chinese culture. Wu Weishan has also gained extensive influence overseas, with his sculptures exhibited in Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, and other countries, earning acclaim from the international art community. MPU and the Portuguese Polytechnics Coordinating Council jointly published the Portuguese edition of “The World of Wu Weishan’s Sculptures”, aiming to showcase Chinese sculpture, art, and traditional culture to Portuguese-speaking countries and Belt and Road countries, as well as to foster dialogue and exchange between China and these regions, and which has been met with enthusiastic responses.
