In pursuit of establishing a centre of excellence for training bilingual Chinese and Portuguese professionals in Macao and fostering the growth of the Sino-Lusophone platform, the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) initiated Sino-Lusophone exchange and internship programmes with higher education institutions in Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs). Each year, both entities send students for exchanges, learning opportunities and internships. Recently, students from the Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation Programme from Portugal for the 2023/2024  academic year successfully concluded their exchange and internship programmes, fostering international collaboration between higher education institutions in Macao and Portugal.

The visiting students from Portugal studying at MPU highlighted that this academic year’s exchange and learning experiences in Macao encompassed professional classes, internships and intercultural interactions. The FLT of MPU orchestrated diverse visits and exchange activities for the visiting students, including trips to the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao, and the MPU Sino-Lusophone Historical Collections. These engagements offered the visiting students a profound insight into Macao’s history, culture, and the dynamics of economic and trade cooperation between China and PSCs. Concurrently, the visiting students undertook internships at the Engineering Research Centre of Applied Technology on Machine Translation and Artificial Intelligence at MPU, a prominent scientific research hub specialising in research, development and application of automatic translation technology. The internships enabled the students to delve into the advancements of automatic translation technology and engage in scientific research initiatives, enhancing their professional competencies and research acumen.

The enduring exchange and collaboration between MPU and various higher education institutions in PSCs have yielded significant outcomes, fostering academic and humanistic exchanges between China and PSCs. MPU remains committed to expanding cooperation across various domains, collaboratively nurturing professionals with global perspectives, thereby advancing Sino-Lusophone cooperation.
