With their outstanding language proficiency, thorough cultural understanding, and excellent overall qualities, they stood out among outstanding participants from more than 20 universities across the country and proudly won the 9th Tomás Pereira Award. Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) is also the only higher education institution in Macao to receive this award in this edition of the competition, fully demonstrating the university's strong capabilities and leading position in cultivating Portuguese language talents.
The Tomás Pereira Award is jointly supported by the University of Aveiro in Portugal and China Three Gorges Corporation. Named after the renowned 17th-century Portuguese missionary and advisor to Emperor Kangxi, Tomás Pereira, the award aims to encourage students majoring in Portuguese language at universities in China to actively delve into language and culture studies, promoting cultural exchanges between China and Portugal. It is an award of significant influence in the field of Portuguese language teaching.
Zhang Yunfeng, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation at MPU, stated that the faculty is deeply committed to language translation education and scientific research, dedicated to cultivating high-level bilingual professionals and advancing cutting-edge disciplinary development. By leveraging a solid teaching system, innovative research platforms, and in-depth international cooperation, the faculty has achieved multiple influential outcomes in areas such as Chinese-Portuguese translation theory development, cross-linguistic intelligent processing, terminology standardization research, and cross-cultural communication, continuously injecting innovative momentum into the development of language and translation disciplines. In the future, the faculty will further expand the boundaries of research, contributing outstanding efforts to promote the modernization of language services and shape a new landscape for cultural exchanges between China and other countries.
The award-winning students, Huang Qizhe and Wu Dongrun, expressed that the Tomás Pereira Award is both an affirmation of their past learning achievements and an inspiration for their future in-depth exploration of Portuguese language and culture. They sincerely thanked MPU for providing an internationalized learning platform and the valuable opportunity to study in Portugal, which allowed them to hone their skills in authentic contexts, broaden their horizons, and deeply appreciate the power of language and the charm of culture. They also expressed gratitude for the dedicated guidance of the faculty's members and the support from their peers. In the future, they will remain true to their original passion, striving to become bridges for cultural exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and contributing to the promotion of friendly interactions between China and Portuguese-speaking nations.
