MPU Organises Sustainable Development Goals Activity to Enhance Students’ Awareness of Water Resource Conservation
MPU students visit the Coloane Wastewater Treatment Plant
In response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) is organising a series of events aimed at fostering global perspectives and civic awareness among university students. Activities have included visits to the Coloane Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Macao Water Supply Company in Ilha Verde, allowing students to gain first-hand insights into local wastewater treatment processes and raw water processing technologies, deepening their understanding of environmental protection and the importance of conserving water resources.
During the visit to the Coloane Wastewater Treatment Plant, students examined various facilities including the screening chamber, biological treatment pool, sedimentation tank, microbial degradation area, and disinfection room. Through professional guided tours, they gained a deeper understanding of the mechanisms and advanced technologies behind wastewater treatment. At the Macao Water Supply Company, students toured the control room and exhibition area, where specialists explained the various treatment stages of drinking water, exposing students to its complete process from production to distribution, further emphasising the importance of water conservation.
Students who participated in both events noted the contrast between the wastewater treatment plant, which purifies urban sewage to meet discharge standards, and the water plant, which ensures the safety of drinking water from the source. These explorations highlighted the importance of water conservation and the necessity of promoting sustainable development. Only through the responsible use of natural resources can we achieve the harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. These two water-themed visits broadened students’ horizons and enhanced their sense of social responsibility, providing students with a deeper understanding of Macao’s urban development.
The Student Affairs Office is committed to integrating the SDGs into the MPU campuses, encouraging students to actively participate in initiatives that positively impact society and the environment. The Office will continue to organise activities that deepen students' understanding of global sustainable development issues and motivate them to contribute to society through practice, collectively building a better future.
