To actively support the Macao SAR government's “On-campus Anti-scam ‘Vaccination’ Programme”, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) organised the “Fraud Prevention Starts with Me” speech competition to enhance anti-scam awareness among university students. This recent event was successfully held with support from the Community Policing and Public Relations Division of the Judiciary Police. Participating students delivered insightful views and powerful speeches to stand against fraud.

The speech competition started accepting speeches from MPU students in October. After fierce competition in the first round, 8 students emerged as finalists: Yu Junya, a Master’s student of Public Administration; Chen Jiaqi, a Bachelor’s student in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language; Bao Guangyu, a Master’s student of Education in Cultural Communication and Education; Ho Ian Lam, a Bachelor’s student in Biomedical Technology; Kou Tak Weng, a Bachelor’s student in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language; Liu Antao, a Bachelor’s student in Artificial Intelligence; Zeng Yuanting, a Master’s student of Business Administration; and Wen Huiwen, a Bachelor’s student in Speech-Language Therapy. The final contestants presented statistics on fraud, real-life stories, tips on scam prevention, and more. Their speeches appealed to the panel and the audience’s sentiment and reason, drawing keen attention. The selection of top performers followed a vigorous process: in the end, Bao Guangyu took first place in the competition with his speech “We need every one of you to fight against fraud”, with Wen Huiwen in second place and Zeng Yuanting in third place.

Bao Guangyu, after the event, noted that he gained valuable experience and progress in speech delivery through the competition. He also stressed that the key thing for fraud prevention was the vigilance of all, and university students should help disseminate anti-scam messages to the people around them. The first-place contestant hoped that this competition could deepen the understanding of fraud among fellow students, and spread relevant advice from the authorities.

During the event, the Judiciary Police shared with the audience the latest modus operandi of fraudsters, and how we can identity scams and deal with them. Panel members and guests included Chiu Chu Wai Man, Head of the Judiciary Police Community Policing and Public Relations Division; Cheong Kim Fong, Duty Supervisor of the Judiciary Police Youth Concern Group; Fong Pok, Principal Criminal Investigator of the Judiciary Police Anti-Fraud Coordination Centre; Maggie Chan, President of Macau Speech Professionals Association (MPSA); Tai Kin Ip, President of the Board of Directors of MPSA; Fong Chan Fai, Vice President of MPSA; Dr. Gan Chunyan, Director of the Teaching and Learning Centre of MPU; and Alice Lao, Head of the Student Affairs Office of MPU.
