MPI 3X3 Basketball Match Promotes Positive University Student Spirit

For the purpose of encouraging students to establish a healthy life and enhancing friendships among students, the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Student Union jointly organised the MPI 3X3 Basketball Match in the Multisport Pavilion. Freshmen, international students and students from different programmes staged passionate matches together, thus promoting the positive and energetic spirit of MPI students.

The MPI 3X3 Basketball Match aimed to disseminate a proactive university student spirit through healthy sports, and required senior students to team up with freshmen and international students, so that it could assist them in being integrated into MPI campus life and building friendships. The match was divided into men’s and women’s groups. The women’s group conducted a single round-robin match. Also the men’s group conducted a single round-robin match to decide the quarter final teams, and then an elimination match to decide the Champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up teams. The participating students were from different programmes including Physical Education, Social Work, Computing, Marketing and International Chinese Language Education; there were even students who are professional basketball players.

The match of the men's group was compact and exciting. The “MPI Team” and “Happy Basketball Team”, both formed by players of the MPI basketball team, battled against each other in the championship final. The “MPI Team” won the champion trophy by a close margin of 1 point. Student Lau Chong Ian, who is the shooting guard of the MPI basketball team, became the Most Valuable Player of the men’s group. The team formed by the students of Public Administration and Physical Education programmes won the champion trophy of the women’s group, and freshman student Chan Chi Cheng became the Most Valuable Player of the women’s group.

An international student, Jordane, said that this was a great opportunity for students of different nationalities and grades to know each other. He hopes that MPI will continue to hold this match next year. Freshman student Yuan of the Portuguese Language Programme, felt nervous and excited when competing with the players from the MPI basketball team. Although there was a disparity of skills, he enjoyed competing with such outstanding basketball players. The co-organisers, the Mainland Student Association and Sports Association of the Student Union, commented that the MPI 3X3 Basketball Match has inherited the excellent MPI traditions of united spirit and mutual care, and that they hope to organise more sports activities to enhance MPI students’ cohesion and enrich their campus lives.
