The Education and Youth Development Bureau and MPU jointly present the "8th World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition," unveiling on June 5th

2024 marks the twin anniversaries of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. In order to support the country's "Belt and Road Initiative" and enhance Macao's role as a platform for promoting cooperation and exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries in various fields, the "8th World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition” aims to facilitate cultural exchanges and mutual learning between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and showcase the spiritual identity and cultural essence of Chinese civilization on a global scale. The competition, co-organized by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and Macao Polytechnic University, has its grand launch on June 5th. Students from around the world are welcome to register for the competition.

MPU Organizes Hippo “English Without Boarders” Olympiad (China National Finals)

To support the development of Macao as a base for international examinations and language training and to implement the “Education + Tourism” project, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), in collaboration with the Global Hippo Association and ASDAN China, co-organized the Hippo “English Without Boarders” Olympiad (China National Finals). This three-day competition took place at MPU and attracted students and parents from all provinces and cities across the country to participate in Macao, driving the joint development of education and tourism with outstanding results.

MPU visited the China International Communications Group, advancing international cultural communication and interpreting the culture of the Greater Bay Area

To strengthen exchange and cooperation with the national language translation sector, a delegation led by Vice-Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), Lei Ngan Lin, visited the China International Communications Group (CICG) on May 7, where they were warmly received by Vice-Director of CICG, Liu Dawei. The purpose of this visit was to further the comprehensive cooperation between MPU, CICG, and the China Translators Association in the fields as international dissemination, cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, promotion of scientificizing the translation qualification examinations, etc., to facilitate the language studies and the training of qualified personnel in translation. MPU is the first examination center for the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) in the Hong Kong and Macao regions. In a friendly atmosphere, both parties reviewed the productive results achieved in the cooperation over the past years, exchanged views, and reached various consensuses on the new trends in the development of the language service sector in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

MPU Students of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language Program Improve Their Translation Skills Through Internships

In order to contribute to the construction of Macao as "a base for exchange and cooperation to promote multicultural coexistence with Chinese culture predominance," students of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) undertook pedagogical internships in various secondary schools in Macao. These internships enhanced their teaching skills and techniques, establishing a solid foundation for the future international teaching of the Chinese language, and achieving fruitful results.

MPU and Shuren University of Zhejiang sign a cooperation protocol

In line with the higher education development strategies of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region and for the training of qualified personnel, a delegation from Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), led by Vice Rector Vivian Lei, visited Shuren University of Zhejiang on May 5th, signing a cooperation protocol with the Rector of Shuren University of Zhejiang, Li Lu. The objective of the protocol is to strengthen the cooperation between higher education institutions in Zhejiang and Macao. The two universities reached consensus on enhancing the exchange of faculty and students in the areas such as language and translation, information technology, medicine, and big health, among others, as well as on the joint development of academic research, the training of qualified personnel, and the organization of training programs. The meeting was conducted in a cordial atmosphere.

MPU Secured Top Prizes in the “21st Portuguese Speech Contest”

To promote Portuguese language education and enhance university students’ Portuguese skills, the “21st Portuguese Speech Contest” was held on April 25th at the University of Macau. This edition of the speech contest attracted participants from various higher education institutions in Macao, showcasing their exceptional abilities in Portuguese expression and public speaking. Students from the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) performed outstandingly, winning the champion and runner-up titles of the Portuguese speech competition, highly acclaimed by the judges of the competition.

MPU Students Gained Valuable Internship Experience at the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum Macao

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) selected outstanding students to participate in internships at the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in order to expand Macau’s role as a Platform for Sino-Portuguese Cooperation and cultivate high-quality Sino-Portuguese bilingual talents with an international perspective. Nearly fifty students from MPU’s master’s degree program in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting, the bachelor’s degree program in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation, and the bachelor’s degree program in Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations took part in the Ministerial Conference. They provided translation services, assisted delegates, and showcased strong bilingual Chinese-Portuguese communication skills, in-depth knowledge of China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and a hospitable service attitude. Their performance received high praise from conference guests representing delegations of the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Chinese Government Friendship Award recipient discusses the future of BRICS countries at MPU

Against the backdrop of the double celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the return of Macao to China and on the eve of the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), Faculty of Languages and Translation, Portuguese Teaching and Research Center, and International Portuguese Training Center of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) co-organized the “China-Portugal New Perspectives Workshop: 50 Years of China-Brazil Relations and the Future of BRICS Countries”. Given by Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award and a Senior Visiting Professor at Peking University, the academic lecture focused on reviewing the friendship between China and Brazil and the development prospect of BRICS countries. The lecture attracted many students, professors and Portuguese-speaking scholars, creating a lively atmosphere.

MPU Visited European Commission Directorate General for Interpretation to Explore Innovative Cooperation in Interpreting Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

A delegation from Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), led by its Vice-Rector, Vivian Lei, visited the European Commission Directorate-General for Interpretation (DG Interpreting), where the delegates were warmly welcomed by the Director-General, Genoveva Ruiz Calavera. The visit aimed to strengthen cooperation and academic exchange in higher education and the bonds between MPU and the international interpreting world, promote cooperation in terms of academic resources, and support the training of interpreting talents in Macao. MPU is the only university in Macao with which DG Interpreting cooperates. In this context, the two parties reviewed the fruitful results of this cooperation achieved over the years, engaged in in-depth discussions, and reached consensus in a pleasant atmosphere on the new opportunities for the development of the translation education sector in the age of artificial intelligence.

MPU Signed a Cooperation Agreement with Macao Scientific and Cultural Center in Portugal to Expand the Role of Macao as a Platform for Sino-Portuguese Cooperation

A delegation from Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) attended the closing ceremony of the “Spring Seminar 2024” organized by the Macao Scientific and Cultural Center (CCCM) on the afternoon of the March 20th, on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal. The delegation, committed to expanding the role of Macao as a platform for Sino-Portuguese cooperation, was warmly welcomed by the President of the CCCM, Carmen Mendes. At the closing ceremony, Vivian Lei, Vice-Rector of MPU, and Mendes delivered speeches and signed on behalf of the two institutions a cooperation agreement. Teng Sio Hong, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) of the Macao SAR Government, attended and witnessed the signing ceremony.

MPU and University of Lisbon signed a cooperation agreement to enhance Sino-Portuguese academic cooperation

In line with the national “Belt and Road Initiative” and to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal, a delegation led by the Vice-Rector of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), Vivian Lei, visited the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) in Portugal on March 19th, and signed an agreement on the cooperation between the two universities with the Rector of ULisboa, Luís Ferreira. The two parties reached a consensus on various issues, including enhancing exchanges between professors and students in the fields of language, science and technology, health and other fields, developing scientific research projects, jointly organizing academic seminars and lectures, exchanging academic publications, and many other aspects. This marks a new stage in Sino-Portuguese academic cooperation.

MPU and a renowned dot-com company organized a sharing session on internships and career development in the Chinese-Portuguese field

In order to further strengthen university-enterprise cooperation, deepen university student’ understanding of the Internet industry, broaden their horizons of career development in the Chinese-Portuguese field, and enhance the quality and ability of social practice, the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and the Student Affairs Office, in collaboration with the well-known dot-com company, Kuaishou, presented a seminar entitled “New Opportunities for Portuguese Learning and Translation in the Age of Self-media” to the students of MPU. Students from the Bachelor’s Programmes in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpretation and in Portuguese at the Faculty of Languages and Translation participated in the event and interacted with the guests in a lively atmosphere.

World's Leading Linguist Delivers Lecture on Innovative English Teaching at MPU

To promote international higher education exchange and cooperation in Macao, the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University invited world-renowned applied linguist Ken Hyland to deliver a fascinating academic lecture on "Innovative English Teaching: Arguments for Specific Courses". The event attracted a total of 400 participants from various universities in Macao and the Greater Bay Area, both online and offline. Professor Hyland engaged in friendly interactions and in-depth discussions with the attending faculty and students, generating enthusiastic responses.

President of the Portuguese-Speaking Higher Education Forum (FORGES) Visited MPU

Margarida Mano, President of the Portuguese-Speaking Higher Education Forum (FORGES) and Vice-Rector of the Catholic University of Portugal, visited Macao Polytechnic University on March 6, to enhance international exchange and cooperation and leverage Macao’s role as a platform between China and Portugal. She was warmly received by Im Sio Kei, MPU’s Rector, and they had extensive and pleasant discussions on various topics, including the forthcoming 14th FORGES Seminar on Higher Education Management to be hosted by MPU in November this year.

MPU Builds Chinese-Portuguese Interpretation Corpus to Promote Development of Industries

The Master of Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting Programme of MPU, based on its excellence in teaching and research, has established a Chinese-Portuguese interpreting corpus to provide professional resources for Chinese-Portuguese interpreter training and for the cultivation of high-end Chinese-Portuguese bilinguals of compound talents for Macao. It is a result of Macao’s implementing “The Second Five-Year Plan”, “1+4” strategy for continuous development of economic diversification, and the talent cultivation mode of “language +”.

Brazilian Linguist Adriana Pagano Delivers Academic Lectures on "Corpus and Translation" and "Cognitive Approach to Translation Studies" at MPU

In order to enhance academic cooperation with prestigious universities and scholars in Portuguese-speaking countries and explore the latest research advancements in the interdisciplinary fields of translation studies and cutting-edge corpus studies, the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Macao Polytechnic University extended an invitation to Adriana Pagano, a linguistics professor from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil. She delivered a series of five academic lectures on "Corpus and Translation" and "Cognitive Approach to Translation Studies". These lectures garnered significant interest from both faculty members and students. The lecture series was conducted using a blend of online and in-person delivery, with active engagement and lively interactions among FLT faculty and students.

MPU Scholars’ Research on Chinese Translation for Scottish Published in International Journal

The academic paper “From Scots to Mandarin: The Translation and Reception of Hugh MacDiarmid’s Poetry in China” by Professor Li Li and Associate Professor Liu Aihua of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University has been published in the international journal Translation and Literature.

MPU Student Wins Second Prize in National Translation Contest

The Second “Foreign Language Award” National English Translation Competition for College Students, organized by the Center for Asia and Pacific of the China International Communications Group, was held earlier. This highly anticipated competition garnered participation from over 40,000 students across the country. Notably, Ma Yunqing and Wu Yanchao, students from the Bachelor's Degree Programme in English-Chinese Translation and Interpretation at the Faculty of Languages and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University, achieved remarkable success under the guidance of Professor Li Li, won the Second Prize and Merit Award respectively. The primary objective of the Competition is to enhance the English language application skills of students in higher education institutions while promoting Chinese stories and effectively disseminating the Chinese voice. By comprehensively evaluating participants' English proficiency, the competition emphasizes the practical application of students’ English knowledge.

MPU-Bell Centre of English now opens the 1st quarter of 2024 training courses for registration

To be in line with the “1+4” moderate economic diversification strategy of Macao SAR Government, and to nurture talents of English language and English learning in the community, the MPU-Bell Centre of English launches English learning courses for the 1st quarter of 2024. The courses cover diversified areas, including IELTS international English test preparation, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) training, Hotel and Tourism English, Business English, Creative English learning, General English and Professional English, English for Beginners, and Teacher Training series, etc., have been included in the DSEDJ Continuous Improvement and Development Programme. Interested parties are welcome to register.

MPU's 2024 Open Day showcased outstanding teaching and research achievements with enthusiastic response

The “Macao Polytechnic University Open Day 2024” was held on 6 January and has showcased the characteristics of the University’s educational approach, information on degree programmes, achievements in teaching and research, social services, and achievements as a result of international cooperation. This was done through a series of activities such as degree programme seminars, guidance sessions for further studies, thematic exhibitions, campus tours, workshops, experiential sessions as well as exchange sessions with graduates. The Open Day has attracted nearly 3000 participants, including recent high school graduates, elites, students and parents, making a very lively event.

MPU International Examination Seminar 2024 held on January 6

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) continues to expand international and national examination and certification services and offer various types of continuing education courses, establishes an examination and certification centre in Macao, supports the “1+4” moderate economic diversification of Macao, and provides a series of international examinations and tests. MPU holds the “International Examination Seminar 2024” on January 6. Candidates from Macao and the Great Bay Area are welcome to attend.

Expanding Macao's role as a Sino-Portuguese platform: The results of the 7th World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition are released

In order to further expand Macao's role as the “Sino-Portuguese platform” and to establish it as an “exchange and cooperation base with Chinese culture as the mainstream and multi-cultural coexistence”, and to enhance Macao's international influence, the 7th World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition (WCPTC), was successfully organized jointly by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Macao Polytechnic University. The event was supported by the Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, the Asia-Pacific headquarters of the China Media Group (CMG), the Language Big Data Alliance (LBDA), and the Portuguese Polytechnics Coordinating Council (CCISP). This year’s competition attracted enthusiastic participation from more than 100 teams representing more than 40 higher education institutions in mainland China, Macao, and Portuguese-speaking countries.

MPU hosted the 22nd Macao-wide English Speech Contest to cultivate English talents in Macao

To promote the cultivation of international English talents in Macao and to promote Macao to serve as an English learning and training base in the Greater Bay Area, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) hosted the 22nd Macao-wide English Speech Contest & 29th “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition Macao Regional Contest. Nearly 60 schools from universities, secondary schools and primary schools in Macao participated. The finals were held recently at the MPU Auditorium. After fierce competition, MPU students finally won the championship and first runner-up in the college category of the Contest. The champion will represent Macao in the National English Speech Contest. Lily Lim, the representative of the organizer and Deputy Director of MPU-Bell Centre of English said that the Macao-wide English Speech Contest has been cooperating with China Daily in 2005 to organize the "21st Century Cup" National English Speaking Competition Macao Regional Contest. It aims to provide young students in Macao with opportunities to meet and exchange with national elites, improve students' English speaking skills, and cultivate their pioneering and innovative spirits, as well as telling the story of Macao.

MPU Students Visit CMG Greater Bay Area Centre

In line with the implementation of Macao youth policy and to deepen the cultivation of patriotism among university students, the Student Affairs Office and the Faculty of Languages and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University recently organised the "Creating the Future - Visit to Greater Bay Area Enterprises and Culture (Shenzhen)" activity. Around thirty undergraduate students participated in the visit to the China Media Group (CMG) Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Centre and institutions under the jurisdiction of the Qianhai Administrative Bureau of Shenzhen. The aim of the activity was to provide more development opportunities and platforms to the students, help the students to better integrate into the overall national development, understand Shenzhen’s achievements of reform and opening up in the past forty years, and deepen their national education.

MPU-Bell Centre of English Organizes AI Creative English Language Teaching Forum

To cultivate English talents and local English teachers for the moderate diversification of Macao's "1+4" economy, the Macao Polytechnic University held the "20th Anniversary of MPU-Bell Centre of English – Creative English Language Teaching Forum" on 24th November. Renowned English teaching scholars from the Greater Bay Area were invited to share their insights, exploring the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in English teaching and the role of creative English teaching in the era of high technology, in order to promote high-quality development of education. Nearly 200 English teachers of Basic Education and from more than ten universities and schools in Macao attended the forum.

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and MPU Signed Agreement to Promote National Development of High-quality Social Sciences

In order to further strengthen the cooperation between Macao and Mainland academia, and to promote the development of academic research in humanities and social sciences in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the grand signing ceremony of the framework agreement on cooperation between Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) was held at MPU on 16 November. The two parties aim to carry out pioneering research in areas such as humanities and social sciences, give full play to Macao’s exemplary and leading role as the “Economic and Trade Co-operation Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (PSCs)”, promote construction of Macao as "a base for cultural exchange and cooperation with Chinese culture as mainstream and multicultural coexistence", jointly cultivate professional talents, give new impetus to the development of higher education and research in the Greater Bay Area, and contribute to the development of the Greater Bay Area in reaching new milestones and achievements.

MPU Organises Seminar on Artificial Intelligence and Language Science to Facilitate High-Tech Development

To support Macao's “1+4” strategy for moderate economic diversification, the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Macao Polytechnic University invited Wang Zhanglong, a member of the National Technical Committee for Language Standardization and Vice President of iFlytek Co., Ltd., to host an academic lecture entitled “Artificial Intelligence Technology and Its Application in Language Learning and Translation” on November 13. The lecture aimed to provide a comprehensive interpretation of the new opportunities brought about by the era of artificial intelligence in language learning and translation, as well as to offer scientific research support for Macao's high-tech industry. The event was well-attended, with nearly two hundred professionals, and teachers and students from Macao Polytechnic University present.

MPU Held the 6th National Conference on Cognitive Translation Studies, Contributing to the “One Base” Construction of Macao

In order to further promote and deepen the development of Cognitive Translation Studies in China, to enhance research and exchange between domestic and international scholars in this field, and to contribute to the construction of Macao as “a base for exchange and cooperation with Chinese culture as the mainstream and the coexistence of different cultures”, the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Macao Polytechnic University successfully held “The 6th National Conference on Cognitive Translation Studies and 2023 Annual Conference of CACSEC-Society of Cognitive Translation Studies”, in collaboration with the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese-Society of Cognitive Translation Studies. This is the first National Conference on Cognitive Translation Studies that has been held in Macao, building a platform for scholars to exchange ideas and further promote and deepen the research and development of Cognitive Translation Studies as well as academic exchanges.

Students from the Faculty of Languages and Translation of MPU Gained Fruitful Internship Experience at Macao International Trade and Investment Fair

A group of more than twenty undergraduate students from the Faculty of Languages and Translation at the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) completed an internship at the “Macao International Trade and Investment Fair” (MIF) and the “1st China-Portuguese-Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Expo (Macao)” (1st C-PLPEX). The students provided assistance in translation work and business negotiations, allowing them to gain in-depth knowledge of Macao's unique advantages as a trade cooperation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as to explore future career opportunities.

MPU student receives Best Student of Portuguese Award from Casa de Portugal em Macau

To honor outstanding local Macao students in Portuguese, the Casa de Portugal em Macau (The Home of Portugal in Macao) held an award ceremony at the Glass House at Tap Seac Square on Portugal’s Republic Day. Mok Man Sam, a student from the Bachelor’s degree programme in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation at the Macao Polytechnic University Faculty of Languages and Translation, received the Best Student of Portuguese Award.

Plaque unveiling for “Base for Training Cooperation Model on IELTS International English Test”: MPU establishing International Examination Centre in Macao

In order to facilitate the policy initiatives of the Macao SAR government and establish Macao as a prominent hub for international examination and certification services, contributing to the development of Macao as the “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure”, Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and Kao Yip Middle School have jointly established the pioneering “Base for Training Cooperation Model on IELTS International English Test” in Macao, the plaque unveiling ceremony for which took place on October 19, 2023. The base aims to nurture English talents in a comprehensive way, further promoting the development of students’ English learning and examination skills and enhance the overall standard of English proficiency in Macao.

MPU Collaborates with EU DG Interpreting to Celebrate International Translation Day 2023

The Faculty of Languages and Translation at Macao Polytechnic University recently organized a celebration for International Translation Day 2023, paying tribute to all language and translation professionals. In 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 71/288, declaring 30 September as International Translation Day to recognize the role of translators in bridging nations. This year's theme for Translation Day was "Translation unveils the many faces of humanity," aiming to highlight the crucial role that translation plays in promoting global societal diversity. The celebration invited the participation of the European Commission Directorate-General for Interpretation (DG Interpreting) online, and students from the International Chinese Language Education program, as well as Chinese-Portuguese translation and Chinese-English translation programs, and announced the theme of International Translation Day in Chinese, Portuguese, and English. The event also featured various performances, creating a lively atmosphere.

MPU-Bell Centre of English: 4th quarter training courses now open for registration

To accommodate the needs for the development of society, the MPU-Bell Centre of English will launch different series of English learning courses for the autumn and winter. The courses include IELTS, General English and Teacher Training, all of which have been included in the DSEDJ Continuous Improvement and Development Programme. Interested parties are welcome to register.

CATTI Tests at MPU are now accepting applications

The 2023 National Certification Examination for Translators (CATTI) will take place at the Macao Polytechnic University on November 4th and 5th, 2023. Macao Polytechnic University is the sole testing venue in Macao offering the English and Portuguese translation exams. Online registration is currently open through September 29th. Individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to participate.

MPU will Hold “The 6th National Conference on Cognitive Translation Studies” and Call for Papers Now Open

On 3-5 November 2023, the Faculty of Languages and Translation, Macao Polytechnic University, will hold, as the organizer, “The 6th National Conference on Cognitive Translation Studies and 2023 Annual Conference of CACSEC Society of Cognitive Translation Studies”, in collaboration with the host, the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese-Society of Cognitive Translation Studies. This is the first time for this national conference to be held in Macao SAR. The conference, under the theme of “Cognitive Translation: Diversity of Translation Research in the Age of Digital Humanities”, intends to encourage interdisciplinary and diversified translation research in the digital age.

MPU-Bell English Centre held a large-scale SAT test

In order to establish an examination and certification centre in Macao and to contribute to its adequate diversification development, MPU-Bell Centre of English held a large-scale SAT test on August 26. Nearly 500 candidates from Macao, Hong Kong and the Mainland participated in the test, which was completed in an orderly manner.

MPU welcomes 2,200 new students at the start of the academic year, the Rector sends a message to inherit the spirit of love for the motherland and for Macao

Macao Polytechnic University held the opening ceremony of the 2023/2024 academic year and the first MPU lecture on August 21, to launch a new study journey with 2,200 new students of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programmes from Macao, the Greater Bay Area, all over the country, as well as Portuguese-speaking countries, and regions overseas. MPU-Bell English Centre Hosts Popular English Teacher Training Courses for Shanghai Teachers

To promote exchanges and collaboration with mainland higher education institutions and to support the Macao SAR government's vision of 'Education + Tourism' for diversified economic development, the MPU-Bell English Centre and Shanghai Normal University joined forces to organise two summer English teacher training courses from July 16th to August 3rd These professional development courses welcomed English teachers from numerous colleges and universities in Shanghai to participate. Throughout the courses, participating teachers received high-quality English teaching training and development while experiencing Macao's rich cultural characteristics. The courses garnered high praise from the attendees and yielded fruitful results.

In line with the moderately diversified economic development of the Special Administrative Region, and the construction of “One centre, One platform, and One base” in Macao, Macao Polytechnic University and Association of Macao Tourist Agents held the launching ceremony of the “Education + Tourism” project on 19 June to promote the construction of a demonstration base for education, cultural tourism for Macao’s World Centre of Tourism and Leisure. Macao Polytechnic University and Association of Macao Tourist Agents will jointly develop education services and tourism to meet the needs of Southeast Asia, the country and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for international and national examinations and certification services, and assist the work of the Examination and Certification Centre of Macao.

MPU Holds 2023 Graduation Ceremony with Over 800 Graduates Embark on a New Journey

The Macao Polytechnic University Graduation Ceremony for Academic Year 2022/2023 was held at 4:00 pm on May 31st at the university's multi-sport pavilion. The national flag was raised and the national anthem was sung at the graduation ceremony. More than 800 students from doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree programs graduated. At the ceremony, honorary doctoral degrees were awarded to individuals who have made outstanding academic achievements and significant contributions to social and educational development. Ms. Ao Ieong U, representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region and chancellor of University Council, the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, expressed that the SAR government will continue to support the university's commitment to the education policy of "dual emphasis on teaching and research", cultivate more outstanding talents for Macao and the country, and create better scientific research results.

MPU research team’s interdisciplinary academic paper published in prestigious international journal

Mu Siqing, Ph.D. student in Portuguese, Li Aoxuan and Shen Lu, Ph.D. students in Computer Applied Technology, Han Lili, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT), and Professor Wen Zhisheng, have had an interdisciplinary academic paper "Linguistic Repertoires Embodied and Digitalized: A Computer-Vision-Aided Analysis of the Language Portraits by Multilingual Youth" published by the journal Sustainability. The paper has been officially published in a special issue of the journal entitled "Technology-Enhanced Language Teaching and Learning: Innovations, Challenges, and Concerns". The journal's current impact factor is 3.889.

Recently, the e-book “Cognition, Language, Culture and Translation: a borderless and interdisciplinary dialogue” was successfully published by Macao Polytechnic University. The e-book is one of the important outcomes of the 2nd International Conference on Encounter with the Human Sciences & The 4th LinCog – International Symposium on Language and Cognition. The e-book is divided into 21 chapters and contains 21 high-quality papers. These papers are developed around the connection between language and cognition, showing the focus of interest and research results of the participating scholars.

MPU Students Achieved Good Results in the 34th Han Suyin International Translation Contest

The students of Macao Polytechnic University obtained good results in the 34th Han Suyin International Translation Contest. Among them, Liu Wenjing, a second-year student in the Master's Degree Programme in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting, won the first prize for Chinese-Portuguese Translation and the third prize for Portuguese-Chinese Translation, and Guo Yan, a second-year student in the Master's Degree Programme in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting, won the excellence award for Portuguese-Chinese Translation.

IELTS Exam at MPU-Bell Centre of English now opens for registration

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the world's leading international test of English language proficiency, recognized by over 11,000 institutions in more than 140 countries and taken by more than three million people each year (www.ielts.org). It is the international English language standard required for education, immigration and employment in countries and regions where English is the language of communication. The new computer-delivered IELTS test will be held in early February in 2023 at the MPU-Bell Centre of English. The test format is consistent with the paper-based test in terms of question types, level of difficulty and scoring criteria, but allows for faster results for candidates.

Professor of Macao Polytechnic University edits special issue of international journal to promote language teaching in the Greater Bay Area

A special issue of the Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education (APJEF) on "Translanguaging Language Policy Planning in the Greater Bay Area of China and Beyond (GBA LPP)" has been published, with Associate Professor Wen Zhisheng of Macao Polytechnic University as Guest Editor-in-Chief, and the foreword is written by Li Wei, Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of London. It is dedicated to a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis of major language policy planning in the Greater Bay Area of China and Beyond (GBA LPP) and related language measures in the classroom, using the innovative translanguaging practice in language education as a theoretical guiding framework. The studies will provide advice and suggestions for the formulation of future language policies.

Teachers and students of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University organized an online event to celebrate the International Translation Day. The theme of this year's International Translation Day is "A World Without Barriers", emphasizing the key role of translators in facilitating the interconnection of different cultures and languages in the world. The Cambridge Handbook of Working Memory and Language, co-edited by Associate Professor Wen Zhisheng of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University and Professor John Schwieter from Canada, was recently published by the prestigious Cambridge University Press. Included in Cambridge University Press' renowned "Cambridge Handbook of Languages ​​and Linguistics" Series, this handbook provides a comprehensive, updated and systematic discussion of the important role of human working memory in first and second language acquisition, processing, language impairment and cognitive training for the academic community at large.

Macao Polytechnic Institute “The 2nd International Conference on ‘Encounter with the Human Sciences’ & The 4th LinCog – International Symposium on Language and Cognition” Calling for Paper Submissions Now

With the goals of promoting interdisciplinary research in the related fields of cognition and language, and constructing a collaborative platform for academic exchanges in the human sciences between Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, mainland China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and the world beyond, the School of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (ESLT-MPI) and the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, will jointly organize the “The 2nd International Conference on ‘Encounters with the Human Sciences’ & the 4th LinCog International Symposium on Language and Cognition”. The conference is to be held in partnership with the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF), the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) and the Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP). It will take place online (via Zoom) from November 29th to December 1st, 2021. The theme is “Cross-border and interdisciplinary dialogue between cognition, language, culture and translation”. The conference features seven thematic symposiums on the sub-themes of “Cognition, Language Acquisition and Language Teaching”; “Cognition, Culture and Literature”, “Cognition and Translation”, “Cognition and Interpretation”, “Cognition and Computer-Aided Translation and Machine Translation”, “Cognition, Pragmatics and Superdiversity”, and “Cognition, Grammar and Discourse”. Scholars at home and abroad are cordially invited to contribute papers in related fields and to participate in the exciting conference.

MPI Launched the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters in the Hong Kong and Macao SAR Regions

Macao's ever first China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) was successfully conducted at the Macao Polytechnic Institute from June 19th to 20th. It was the very first time that Macao and Mainland China simultaneously launched this test on the same day. More than 100 candidates participated in the English and Portuguese-language interpretation and translation (level 1 to 3) test at the MPI test site. Prior to this, Jiang Ping, general manager of the CATTI Project Management Center of the China Foreign Languages Bureau, and Feng Jingyi, deputy general manager, had paid a visit to the test sites at MPI. They were accompanied by MPI's Vice President Lei Ngan Lin and the Director of the School of Languages and Translation Han Lili, and were briefed on the allocations of the test sites and the conditions of the venue, other related security and confidentiality issues, and the anti-epidemic prevention measures during the tests, etc. They also provided guidance on technical aspects of the digitalized examination.

MPI will provide training for all registered candidates

CATTI tests will be hosted by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI). The first CATTI Tests in Chinese-Portuguese and Chinese-English are scheduled to take place at MPI on June 19 and 20. To help candidates to prepare for the tests effectively, the School of Languages and Translation of MPI will provide training for all registered candidates on June 2 and June 5 respectively, and will not charge any cost. Interested candidates can log on MPI’s “language training and testing” website from May 1 to May 15 https://www.ipm.edu.mo/eslt/zh/catti.php to register and select one of the two sessions under the section of “Training for CATTI candidates”. Seats will be limited.

MPI publishes A Course in International Chinese

The Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has been forging ahead to strengthen academic disciplines, develop teaching materials and facilitate the development of language talents. Edited by Professor Lei Heong Iok, A Course in International Chinese, Elementary Level, Volume 1, has been published by the Beijing Commercial Press. It comprises a Student’s Book, an Exercise Book and a Teacher’s Book. As the first set of teaching materials on International Chinese developed in Macao and the first of its kind to present its content in Chinese, Portuguese and English, the publication of the coursebook plays a positive role in the development of International Chinese Education in Macao and the enhancement of the quality of teaching Chinese to learners from Portuguese-speaking countries.

MPI and IPIM Jointly Organised an Experience Sharing Session to Consolidate Young People's Knowledge about the Sino-Lusophone Platform

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) jointly organised the “Experience Sharing Session on Portuguese Speaking Countries” on 13th April. The event aimed to promote Macao's role as an Economic and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries, to raise awareness of the platform among the younger generation, and to encourage Macao’s higher education students to take advantage of the platform during their careers.

First CATTI Test Location in Macao and Hong Kong established at MPI

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the CATTI Program Project Management Center of the Chinese Foreign Language Publishing Administration (the Center) held an online cooperation agreement signing ceremony on March 25, 2021. Prof. Im Sio Kei, President of MPI, and Ms. Feng Jingyi, Legal Representative of the Center signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of both parties. The two parties will jointly promote the establishment of the first China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) test location in Macao and Hong Kong at MPI and hold the first Chinese-Portuguese and Chinese-English tests here in June this year, which is also the first Chinese-Portuguese test in CATTI history.

MPI Publishes Chinese-Portuguese Teaching Materials to Promote Disciplinary Development

To contribute to Macao’s success in becoming the training base for Chinese-Portuguese bilingual talents, the teaching team of the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has published five Chinese-Portuguese interpretation and translation textbooks, covering topics such as translation theory and practice, literature and Chinese traditional medicine. The Chinese-Portuguese translation discipline has witnessed remarkable developments in recent years, but teaching materials in the local context have not been catching up. These publications are valuable teaching materials which have just now filled the gaps in the fields of Chinese-Portuguese translation studies and Chinese-Portuguese translation skills.

MPI and the European Commission’s Directorate-General of Interpretation Jointly Organize Interpreting Training Course

In order to cultivate Chinese-Portuguese bilingual professionals and strengthen the cooperation between the European Union and the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), the International Portuguese Training Centre for Conference Interpreting of MPI cooperated with the Directorate General for Interpretation of the European Commission (DG-SCIC) in co-organizing a "Consecutive Interpretation Intensive Training Course" from 25 August to 4 September 2020. Experienced trainers from the DG-SCIC, together with teachers of MPI, taught consecutive interpreting knowledge and skills to interpreting major students of the Master of Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting programme, and also provided practical learning opportunities to students online.

MPI’s MA Students Benefit from Internship & Aid the Growth of Macao “One Platform”

Between May and July 2020, the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) arranged internship opportunities for more than a dozen students of its Master’s degree programme. Students were trained at the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) (Forum Macao), and at the Rui Cunha Foundation. The training deepened their knowledge of the translation industry, improved their communication skills and enhanced their competitiveness.

The Translation Technology and Translation Project Management Workshop, jointly organized by the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), was successfully held between July 8 and 17 on the main campus of MPI. MPI and SCIC co-organised the “9th Conference Interpreting Training Seminar”

In order to develop professionals in the field of interpreting in the Portuguese-speaking conferences in Macao and the Mainland China, the “9th Conference Interpreting Training Seminar” jointly organised by the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the European Commission Directorate-General for Interpretation (SCIC) was held at MPI on June 24. More than a dozen interpreters from the government departments of the Mainland and Macao SAR attended a two-week high-level, high-intensity, intensive training course in Portuguese. The organisers looked forward to strengthening the “One Belt and One Road” and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through the seminar, and to enhancing the role of Macao as a platform for exchanges and cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Renowned Translation Scholar Held Lectures at MPI

To enhance students’ translation competence, broaden the horizons of both faculty members and students, Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Programme of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) recently invited renowned German scholar and theorist in translation studies, Professor Christiane Nord, to give three lectures, which appealed to over two hundred faculty members and students to attend, receiving heated responses.

MPI Organised “Brushing Up Your English” Activities

In the first semester of this academic year, the MPI Student Affairs Office and the MPI-Bell Centre of English jointly organised a series of extra-curricular English activities for its undergraduates. Following the Institute’s long-standing tradition of learning foreign languages and aimed at encouraging the undergraduates to improve their English proficiency and sharpening their daily-life English skills in their leisure time, the series, entitled “Brushing Up Your English”, included an English writing competition, a Halloween English party, social English lunch gatherings, an IELTS preparation course and a course for strengthening their communicative ability in English, and all activities of the series were very well received. Some participants in those activities even took one step further and obtained the “Cambridge English Business Certificate”, an international certificate recognising their English proficiency for professional purposes.

The 16th Macao-wide English Speech Contest and 23rd “21st Century” National English Speaking Competition Macao Regional Contest took place on Saturday-Sunday, 11th-12th November 2017. The Macao-wide English Speech Contest was established in 2002, its purpose being to promote the use of English in Macao in the era of globalisation, to encourage people from all walks of life to learn English, and to promote English language teaching.

MPI and European Commission co-organise the 7th Conference Interpreting Seminar

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission (EC) are joining hands to organise the 7th Conference Interpreting Seminar from 10 to 21 July. This collaboration aims to nurture high-calibre talent in conference interpretation as well as train Portuguese university teachers working in Macao and the Chinese Mainland. More than ten professional translators and Portuguese teachers from Macao and Chinese universities, together with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, are attending this two-week advanced training in interpretation.

The Communication University of China and MPI engage in an exchange on the beauty of recitation

More than 30 teachers and students from several universities, including the Communication University of China (CUC), visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 22 May for a cultural exchange and academic sharing session. Professor Lu Jingchao, member of the national committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Dean of the School of Presentation Art of CUC, chaired a session entitled ‘The Beauty of Recitation’. Students from CUC also put on a wonderful recitation and clapper talk - tongue twister performance, receiving rounds of applause from a hundred teachers and students who were enchanted by this superb demonstration of prose and sound.

MPI launches first Bachelor’s programme in Macao for aspiring teachers of Portuguese

To strengthen Macao’s role in the establishment of multiple cooperation and services platforms between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and to strengthen the training of Portuguese teachers in Macao, MPI is launching the city’s first Bachelor’s programme in Portuguese Language. MPI's Bachelor's programme in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation has successfully passed an academic review by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), Portugal. The President of A3ES, Professor Alberto Amaral presented the programme accreditation certificate and evaluation report of the Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation Programme to MPI. Professor Amaral expressed his gratitude for the unremitting efforts of MPI to bring high-quality teaching standards to the students. He also commended MPI for its continuous improvement and congratulated MPI again for the international recognition of its various programmes which adhere to international standards for higher education.

MPI, Bell and New Oriental Sign Tripartite Agreement

To strengthen the English Education and enhance the training quality of English teachers in China, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), Bell Educational Trust (Bell) and New Oriental Education and Technology Group (New Oriental) signed a tripartite agreement on 14 November at MPI. The agreement was signed by Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI, on behalf of MPI, Mr. Greg Hoile, Chief Executive of Bell Educational Services Ltd., on behalf of Bell, and Mr. Zhou Chenggang, Chief Executive Officer of New Oriental Education and Technology Group, on behalf of New Oriental.

The Bell Teacher Campus Opens at MPI

The MPI-Bell Centre of English and Bell Educational Services have jointly organised the 4th Bell Teacher Campus 2016, which is held from July 11th to 22nd, for teachers of English to develop as professionals, to share ideas and meet teachers from other cultures. The series of courses this year has attracted more than 100 teachers from schools and universities in mainland China and Macao, including Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Shantou University, English School Attached to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Sanshui Foreign Languages School, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Guangdong Experimental High School, Guangzhou Yuexiu District Education Development Centre, The Chinese Educators Association of Macau and City University of Macau.

MPI’s Translation Programme Positively Reviewed
by New Zealand’s Academic Quality Agency

The Bachelor of Arts programme in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), has been positively reviewed by the Academic Quality Agency for New Zealand Universities (AQA). This marks the first degree programme in the field of translation and interpretation to be internationally reviewed in Macao. The review panel commended the programme’s teaching quality, research development and student support services. This lays a solid foundation for further enhancement of the programme’s provision of student learning opportunities.

New Programme in International Chinese Language Education at MPI

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) will offer a new Bachelor of Arts degree programme in International Chinese Language Education in the 2016/2017 academic year, with the launching ceremony held yesterday (31 March 2016). MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok noted that this is the first Bachelor’s programme offered by Macao’s higher education institutions in the field of International Chinese Language Education. Filling the gap in the higher education history of Macao, this programme will facilitate not only the development of the bilateral exchange platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries but also the implementation of the country’s ‘One Belt One Road’ strategy. This programme is open for application from now till 6 May 2016 at MPI’s admission website.

New Era of Cooperation between MPI and Bell Cambridge

A close partner of Macao Polytechnic Institute for more than a decade, Bell Educational Trust Cambridge is an internationally recognised English language institution which has contributed greatly to English language education in Macao. Recently, Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI, led a delegation to visit Bell Cambridge and received a warm welcome from Chief Executive Greg Hoile. Both parties looked back at the work done so far in facilitating the teaching of English in Macao, and subsequently reached consensus on future collaborative projects, marking a new era in English language education.
