Gambling Participation Among the Elderly: Current Status, Trends and Policies
Abstract: The world’s elderly population is growing rapidly, and the growth in China is particularly prominent. The proportion of empty nesters among the aging population is increasing. As the elderly population increases, the number of elderly participation in gambling is increasing. But so far, relevant research is quite lacking. This paper summarizes the existing research results through literature review methods. Based on the available research, it is concluded that the gambling participation rate among the elderly population is very high. The main motivations for participation were entertainment and socializing. Gambling participation among seniors can help maintain social connections and prevent or slow down psychological problems and cognitive decline in old age. The proportion of problem gambling that may arise from elderly gambling participation is relatively low, but once it occurs, the negative impact is great. The government and society should take the gambling participation of the elderly group seriously, and should both utilize the positive value of gambling activities and prevent the risks involved in gambling participation among the elderly. This paper has certain reference significance for the government’s gambling decisions and the market decisions of gambling companies.

Challenges and Future of Responsible Gambling Policy in Australia:Regulation, Enforcement and Protection of High-Risk Groups
Abstract: The gambling industry is a significant economic sector in Australia, yet its societal impact has garnered increasing scrutiny. To mitigate the negative effects of problem gambling, the Australian government has implemented a multitiered framework of Responsible Gambling Policies, encompassing expenditure restrictions, intervention mechanisms, and advertising regulations. However, despite ongoing refinements to the regulatory framework, protections for highrisk populations—including culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, lowincome individuals, and young people—remain inadequate. CALD communities face disadvantages in accessing responsible gambling programs and support services due to language barriers and cultural adaptation challenges. Meanwhile, gambling enterprises employ social media and targeted advertising strategies to expand gambling risks among these groups, further exposing them to gamblingrelated harm. Additionally, the proliferation of online gambling platforms and the gamification of betting experiences have intensified young Australians' engagement with gambling, increasing their susceptibility to financial and social risks. As digital technologies evolve and the gambling market continues to transform, future challenges in responsible gambling policy will center on addressing the expansion of crossborder online gambling, balancing industry interests with social risk mitigation, and enhancing the adaptability and accessibility of regulatory mechanisms. The inconsistency of regulatory standards across states, advancements in digital gambling oversight technologies, and shifting public perceptions of gambling risks will all play pivotal roles in shaping policy adjustments. The future trajectory of responsible gambling regulation may involve more refined advertising and marketing controls, the strengthening of datadriven monitoring technologies, and the optimization of intervention mechanisms for highrisk populations. These developments will continue to shape the landscape of gambling governance in Australia.

A Study on the Degree of Intentional Lottery Selection Behavior Among Chinese Sports Lottery Players and Its Influencing Factors ——Take Super Lotto and Rank 3 as Examples
Abstract: From the perspective of control illusion in behavioral finance, we construct intentional lottery selection indicators through mathematical statistical models, and specifically examine the intentional lottery selection of sports lottery players in 31 provinces and cities in our country from 2018 to 2022. Secondly, we explore the intentional lottery selection of sports lottery players in our country through econometric regression models. The influencing factors behind lottery players’ intentional lottery selection behavior were analyzed, and the results were compared with the corresponding indicators of shuangseqiu, a representative variety of welfare lottery, and its related influencing factors. We found that sports lottery players in various provinces in our country generally have higher intentional lottery selection behavior, and the differences between provinces are more obvious, and the three economic and demographic indicators of education level, economic level, and demographic characteristics have different effects on our country. Sports Lottery Super Lotto and Rank 3 lottery players’ intentional number selection behavior has varying degrees of impact. Changes in external conditions will also have an impact on the intentional number selection behavior of our country’s sports lottery players. Lottery agencies and government departments at all levels should strengthen marketing, improve the innovation of various types of sports lottery games, and formulate more reasonable and mature lottery rules, so as to better cultivate the healthy lottery buying psychology of sports lottery buyers. This will further promote the construction of responsible lottery in our country.

Post-Pandemic Transformations in China’s Lottery Market and Their Implications
Abstract:This study is based on the lottery sales data in our country before and after the pandemic, and systematically analyzes the phased impact of the pandemic on the lottery industry and the structural changes in the market. The study finds that: (1) The impact of the pandemic shows obvious characteristics of three stages: it caused a sharp contraction of the market in the initial stage, a rapid recovery in the middle stage, and an explosive growth in the later stage. (2) The structure of lottery varieties has undergone significant reconstruction: video lottery has completely withdrawn from the market, sports betting lottery has shown exponential growth, instant lottery has maintained a steady upward trend, the market share of lotto number lottery has continued to shrink, and the growth of keno lottery has stagnated. (3) The current lottery market presents five evolution trends: the structure of the consumer group is becoming younger (more than half of the people are aged 18-35), more female-oriented (female consumers account for nearly 40%), and more white-collar-oriented (accounting for 60%); the consumption motivation has shifted towards entertainment and social interaction; online marketing and services are very popular; physical sales outlets are accelerating their transformation, manifested as the reconstruction of channel functions (diversified services), technology empowerment (the popularization of intelligent terminals), the deepening of community services, and the innovation of consumption scenarios (the growth of theme stores). The sharp decline in lottery sales in the initial stage of the pandemic in our country was due to strict pandemic control measures and the cautious consumption mentality caused by the pandemic. The explosive growth in lottery sales after the pandemic was, on one hand, due to the obvious lipstick effect under the condition of economic downturn, and on the other hand, due to the strong promotion of lottery marketing. In response to the changes in the lottery market, the lottery industry needs to promote the diversification of lottery products and marketing innovation to adapt to the changes in consumption needs brought about by the changes in the lottery consumer group, accelerate product innovation and service upgrading, and improve the level of supervision and regulatory technology.

Abstract: Since the handover of Macao 25 years ago, its economy has achieved leapfrog development. As a pivotal economic pillar of Macau, the gaming industry is closely tied to the sustainable development of the region. This research constructs an evaluation index system for Macau’s sustainable development from three dimensions: economic development, environmental conditions, and social progress. On this basis, it analyzes the coupling and coordination situation, as well as the interactive relationship between Macau’s gaming industry and sustainable development. The paper examines the coupling relationship and proposes optimization strategies for the sustainable development of Macau’s gaming industry and regional economy at the economic, environmental, and social levels. It is hoped that the government, gaming enterprises, and all sectors of society will work together to achieve harmonious coexistence. In the future, Macau needs to continue strengthening the supervision of the gaming market and promoting the digital and intelligent transformation of the industry. Tourism Destination Risk Management: Potential Tourists’ Risk Perception and Its Mechanism
Abstract: Major emergencies can have disastrous effects on the image and market of tourist destinations. Researchers have explored various factors influencing tourists’ risk perception; however, there is a lack of research on the characteristics of risk perception among tourists from different regions and the mechanisms behind its formation. The “sudden surge in tourism risks in Hong Kong” in June 2019 provided an opportunity to study these issues. Through a survey of approximately 1,000 individuals from 31 provincial-level administrative regions in China, we examined the relationship between their distance from Hong Kong and their concerns about safety in the region. The results found that: 1) the further individuals are from Hong Kong, the more they worry about its safety, while those residing in Hong Kong (the participants in this survey were mainland students studying in Hong Kong) have the lowest safety concerns. We interpret this new finding as a “psychological typhoon eye effect” in response to the ongoing risks of radical violent crime in Hong Kong. 2) The mechanism that explains this revised effect is the change in "proportion of risk information" due to agenda-setting. By exploring the importance of the "proportion of risk information" variable in risk perception and risk communication practices and research, we conclude that the imbalance in media agenda-setting is a major reason for the public’s overestimation of specific risk sources. This study provides valuable guidance for other tourist cities facing similar risks. Download PDF

The Effects of Food Image and Service Quality on Tourist Satisfaction and Loyalty: A Case Study of Macao
Abstract: This study focuses on food tourism in Macau, exploring the relationships among food image, service quality tourists’ satisfaction and loyalty. We collected 507 valid responses from tourists who had visited Macao. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used for data analysis. The major findings are fivefold: Food image and service quality have a positive effect on tourist satisfaction; Tourist satisfaction has a positive effect on loyalty; The three demographic variables (income, age, and gender) has a significant moderation effect on the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty; Food image and service quality have an indirect effect on loyalty through tourist satisfaction, highlighting the mediating role of tourist satisfaction; Multigroup analysis reveals that gender has a significant moderating effect on food experience evaluation, with male tourists’ loyalty being more directly influenced by food image and, that of female tourists relying more on overall satisfaction ratings. The empirical results have implications for the catering industry in the following aspects: strengthening the destination’s food images, enhancing service quality of restaurants, implementing differentiated marketing strategies, and establishing longterm customer relationships.

Research on the Impact of Perceived Authenticity of Cultural Landscapes in Traditional Villages of Ethnic Regions on Tourist Subjective Well-being and Memorability
Abstract: As a key domain of cultural tourism, the core attraction of traditional villages in ethnic regions lies in the authenticity and uniqueness of their ethnic culture. However, most studies on ethnic tourism in traditional villages predominantly focus on the objective paradigm of authenticity, emphasizing the historical preservation and evaluation of tangible elements such as architecture and artifacts. There is a lack of systematic empirical research on how tourists perceive the cultural landscape and tourism authenticity of traditional villages from a bottom-up perspective. Therefore, this study aims to fill this knowledge gap by examining tourists' perceptions of the authenticity of cultural landscapes in traditional villages of ethnic regions. Specifically, the study investigates the multidimensional structure of perceived authenticity and its relationship with subjective well-being and memorability, providing theoretical insights for managers to optimize the visitor experience in traditional villages of ethnic regions.
