MPI publishes Comparing the community relationships between Macao and Taiwan: From the perspective of oceanic, colonial and immigrant culture

The book of Professor Shaw Chong-Hai, honorary professor of MPI, Comparing the community relationships between Macao and Taiwan: From the perspective of oceanic, colonial and immigrant culture, has been published. The book analyses the difference of the development of economic and society in Taiwan and Macao from three perspectives: colonial, immigrant and oceanic culture.

Following the book Cross-strait Negotiation and Consultation: From the white gloves to officials to...? published by the Tonsan Publications Inc., the book Comparing the community relationships between Macao and Taiwan: From the perspective of oceanic, colonial and immigrant culture is the second monograph written by Professor Shaw and is the 29th publication in Shaw’s academic career. The aim of this book is mainly to discuss the reason why Macao, although sharing a similar multiethnic society as Taiwan, does not have too strong an ethnic consciousness, conflict and confrontation when compared with Taiwan. Moreover, Macao is more tolerant and very pleased to accept new immigrants. The immigrants in Macao, once settled but even if not thriving in it, are not willing to be called “new immigrants”, they are proud to be named as “Macao people”.

This monograph is funded by the Cultural Affairs Bureau. Writing for the publication by MPI, Professor Shaw further enriched the information contained in the book since February 2016. The publication is now available for sale in Seng Kwong Bookshop in Macao and Tonsan Publications Inc. is the exclusive distributor in Taiwan.
