MPI continues to be most popular in Macao with 4000 applications from secondary graduates

MPI receives high recognition for its teaching quality, attracting close to 4,000 applications from Macao students

The application period for admission to Bachelor’s programmes offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) in 2017/18 has ended. MPI has consistently been the most popular choice among local secondary students for university education with its internationally recognised education, vibrant campus life, as well as the excellent further education and career prospects it offers. This year MPI received applications from close to 4,000 candidates, witnessing intense competition for admission into its undergraduate programmes. In addition, over 200 outstanding and talented students, who as freshmen would be playing a key role in fostering a positive learning atmosphere at MPI, were recommended by local secondary school principals for admission, marking their recognition of the quality and standards of MPI’s education provision. In the new academic year MPI will keep forging ahead with the principle ‘Local Education Serving the Macao Community’ and recruit mainly students from Macao, contributing to the realisation of Macao’s ‘One Centre, One Platform’ development goal by supplying the community with yet more outstanding professionals.

According to MPI’s Registry, while there are around 5,200 graduating secondary students this year, the number of applications received is almost the same as that of last year, further pointing out that the quality of applicants is very satisfactory. As of the close of application period in late January, around 4,000 local students have applied to MPI to pursue further education. Undergraduate programmes in Chinese-Portuguese Translation, Social Work, Public Administration, Education, Arts, Computing, Nursing, and Gaming and Recreation Management, which aim to train qualified local professionals for the economic development of Macao, continue to be popular choices. Admission into the new Bachelor’s Programme in Speech-Language Therapy is especially competitive, with over 600 applicants competing for 20 places. With the support of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, the Social Welfare Bureau, the Health Bureau, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Tertiary Education Services Office, this programme seeks to nurture competent professionals to address the lack of locally trained professionals in this field. Graduates will receive the qualifications required of a speech therapist.

MPI’s Registry also notes that more than 250 local students were recommended for admission by their school principals. They are either academically high rankers or local/international award winners in fields such as science and technology, sports, arts, debating, public speaking and English speaking. Many of these outstanding students have gained direct admission to MPI after being recommended by their principals and having passed an admission interview, while some have been awarded a scholarship as an encouragement to further excel in their studies.

MPI is dedicated to the training of yet more well-qualified talents for the local community. The Institute and most of its programmes have been accredited or recognised internationally. Programmes adopting the ‘3+1’ and ‘2+2’ mode of learning allow students to gain global exposure at tens of overseas institutions in Portugal, United States, Brazil, Chinese Mainland and Taiwan. In addition, the employment rate of MPI’s graduates has remained strong in recent years, their good qualities and performance being widely acknowledged by employers. In the new academic year, MPI will continue to recruit mostly students from Macao as a commitment to nurture multi-faceted local talents and cultivate application-oriented professionals for the development of society. Further information on admissions examinations will be available at a later date on the Institute’s website (www.ipm.edu.mo/admission).
