MPI Students Learn about Historical Figures of Macao

MPI students visit Lin Zexu Monument

In order to enhance university students’ knowledge and understanding of Macao’s local history and cultural specialty, the Student Affairs Office of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) recently organised “Taking A Walk through the Streets of Macao—Knowing about Macao” for students to learn more about Macao’s historical significance and cultural attributes through studying and exploring the footsteps of famous historical figures in Macao.

Guided by a docent from the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), students visited places related to Macao’s historical figures, such as Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Clinic, General Ye Ting’s Former Residence, and Lin Fung Temple where Lin Zexu once stayed. Mr. Guo, a PhD student majoring in Portuguese, said that the guided tour helped him to understand the historical stories and people behind each scenic spot, and it had deepened his knowledge of Macao’s history and culture, which was very helpful to his interested academic field and his life in Macao. Ms. Denilsy, a student from Cape Verde studying Public Administration said that the activity was a great opportunity to gain knowledge out of classes, and the presentation of the guided tour was very interesting and lively. She added that the activity also helped international students to integrate into the living in Macao, and hoped there would be more activities of such kind in the future.

Macao Polytechnic Institute has always placed emphasis on the whole person development of young people, and has been actively organising a wide range of activities on and off campus. The Student Affairs Office organises a number of experiential activities based on Chinese traditions and Macao’s historical culture to promote multicultural exchange, broaden university students’ cultural knowledge, and to enrich their learning experience.
