MPU Participates in the First Chinese-Portuguese Translation Seminar Organised by the Translators Association of China

Participants of the First Chinese-Portuguese Translation Seminar of the Translators Association of China

The Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT) of the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) was invited to participate online in the First Chinese-Portuguese Translation Seminar organised by the Translators Association of China (TAC). The seminar was co-hosted by the Foreign Languages Press, the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, and the Academy of Translation and Interpretation of China International Communications Group. More than 20 senior translation experts and frontline professionals from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group, China International Communications Group, Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Communication University of China, Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing International Studies University, and MPU attended the seminar. The participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the standardisation and normalisation of Chinese-to-Portuguese translation of political discourses, as well as the key contents of the “Standards and Norms for Translating Chinese Political Discourse into Portuguese”, resulting in a broad consensus and fruitful outcomes. As the only university invited from Macau, MPU greatly benefited from this seminar.

The seminar aimed to standardise and normalise the translation of Chinese discourse into foreign languages, ensuring China's primary defining and interpretative rights for its discourse in the international community. Gao Anming, Editor-in-Chief of the China International Communications Group and Executive Vice-President and Secretary-General of the TAC, participated in the seminar and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Xu Rong, Editor-in-Chief of the Foreign Languages Press. Other attendees included Fan Daqi, Deputy Director of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, and Xing Yutang, Deputy Director of the Academy of Translation and Interpretation of the China International Communications Group, and Executive Deputy Secretary-General of the TAC. The discussion session was moderated by Wei Ling, the former chief translator of Portuguese at China Media Group, retired review specialist of the Portuguese Department of the Centre for European and Latin American Language Program, and special reviewer at the Foreign Languages Press.

During the opening ceremony, Gao Anming highlighted how the mechanism of Chinese-to-foreign languages translation seminars established by the TAC is the critical means to enhance the precision, standardisation, and effectiveness of translating and disseminating China’s political discourse and key expressions internationally. This mechanism exemplifies the proactive role of the TAC in shouldering the era’s mission of “translating China.” In recent years, the association has been committed to expanding and improving this mechanism. The convening of this Chinese-Portuguese translation seminar marks the addition of a new language to the seminar mechanism, which will contribute to the standardisation and normalisation of Chinese-to-Portuguese translation, expand the platform for translating Chinese discourse into Portuguese, deepen cultural exchanges and mutual understanding with Portuguese-speaking countries, and provide robust language support for delivering true and accurate Chinese voices on the international stage, thus better serving China’s international exchange and communication strategies.
