Dr. Tang Jie shares an overview of Antarctica

To promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and raise awareness among university students about global warming, the Student Affairs Office of Macao Polytechnic University organised a lecture on sustainable development goals titled “From Polar to Global: Antarctic Scientific Expeditions and Climate Change Research”. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Tang Jie, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. The Acting Rector of Macao Polytechnic University, Lei Ngan Lin, the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Lam Chan Tong, and numerous university members and students attended the lecture.

Dr. Tang Jie specialises in atmospheric chemistry observations and has served as a member of the Operational Expert Group for the World Meteorological Organisation's Global Atmosphere Watch Programme. He was responsible for the international assistance project and operational development of China's first Global Atmosphere Watch Baseline Observatory. Dr. Tang has led atmospheric composition observation projects at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica and has conducted four scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, gaining extensive experience in polar research. The lecture introduced common species, mineral resources, and natural wonders such as ventifacts in Antarctica, and presented Zhongshan Station, one of China's main scientific research stations in Antarctica.

During the Q&A session, students asked Dr. Tang about his journey to joining the Antarctic expedition team and the requirements to become an Antarctic expedition candidate. Dr. Tang explained that in addition to having extensive professional knowledge, it is also crucial to focus on overall mental and physical development, especially cultivating psychological resilience. He encouraged students to develop strong mental endurance to cope with various challenges.

Students attending the lecture said that Antarctic expeditions are a challenging and sacred mission, and through this lecture they gained a deep understanding of the lives and work of expedition members. The vivid stories added a human touch to the mysterious Antarctic expeditions, and they felt a profound respect for the expedition members' dedication and sense of mission.
