Macao Polytechnic University signs agreements with the University of Lisbon and the Catholic University of Portugal to jointly establish a talent and scientific research cooperation platform

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Portugal, in order to leverage Macau’s role as a “precise contact” between China and Portuguese speaking countries and deepen international cooperation in Macau’s higher education, the President of Macau Polytechnic University, Marcus Im, and his delegation visited Portugal, and signed cooperation agreements with Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Universidade de Lisboa to simultaneously promote research and innovation as well as talent cultivation. The cooperations cover the establishment of joint laboratories and student exchange programs, marking a new milestone for Macau in Sino-Portuguese higher education cooperation and opening a new chapter in deepening Sino-Portuguese educational exchanges.

In the field of scientific research cooperation, President of Macau Polytechnic University and the Vice President of the Catholic University of Portugal, Nelson Ribeiro, signed a cooperation agreement to jointly establish the “MPU-UCP Joint Research Laboratory for Cognition, Language and Neuroscience”. The joint laboratory will be dedicated to innovative research in cutting-edge fields such as applied linguistics, speech science, health science, and neuroscience, and promote interdisciplinary scientific cooperation. The Portuguese representatives attending the signing ceremony also included Isabel Vasconcelos, Vice President for Teaching and Educational Innovation, Margarida Mano, Vice President for Continuous Improvement and Development, and Ana Mineiro, Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Nursing.

In terms of talent cultivation, under the witness of Rector Marcus Im, President of Macao Polytechnic University, Joaquim Manuel Costa Ramos de Carvalho, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation, and Hermenegildo Fernandes, Dean of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Lisbon, signed a student exchange agreement. President Rector Marcus Im emphasizes that Macao, as an important bridge for friendly cooperation between China and Portugal, has always actively promoted the cultivation of bilingual talents between China and Portugal. This cooperation will further deepen the exchange between teachers and students of the two universities, and create favorable conditions for cultivating high-quality talents with international perspectives. Over the past thirty years, the deep cooperations between Macau Polytechnic University and Portuguese universities have witnessed the continuous deepening of Sino-Portuguese relations and demonstrated Macau’s unique advantages in promoting Sino-Portuguese education cooperation. By establishing joint laboratories and implementing student exchange programs in a dual track manner, the international influence of Macau Polytechnic University has been enhanced, providing strong support for the construction of "one center, one platform, one base" in Macau. This series of cooperation will inject new impetus into the education and scientific research cooperation between China and Portugal in the new era, further consolidating Macao’s important position as a bridge of friendly cooperation between China and Portugal. Joaquim Carvalho, Vice Dean of the School of Languages and Translation at the Macau Polytechnic University, and Cheong Weng Lam, Christy, Head of Academic Affairs Department, accompanied the visit and attended the relevant signing activities.
