MPU Awards Scholarships to 600 Outstanding Students

The Macao Polytechnic University held the 2023 Scholarship Award Ceremony at the University Auditorium on April 22. Scholarships were awarded to 600 outstanding students to recognise their excellent achievements in different academic and professional fields, and to encourage students to continue to strive for academic excellence and motivation. MPU aims to cultivate young leaders who are creative and competitive with an international perspective to contribute to the country.

MPU 2023 Information Day Showcased Diverse Teaching and Research Achievements and Received Overwhelmingly Positive Reactions

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) successfully held its hybrid 2023 Information Day on 22 April. Through a series of programmes and studies consultation booths, academic research experiences, sharing sessions, thematic exhibitions, and performances by students from Portuguese-speaking countries, it showcased MPU’s characteristics, programme information, as well as the latest research results to the community. Prospective secondary school graduates, secondary school students, their parents and the public were attracted to participate, and the response has been enthusiastic.

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) will hold the 2023 Information Day both online and in-person on 22 April (Saturday), with booths for consultation on programmes and studies, experiences for academic and research, sharing sessions, special exhibitions and performances and more, providing the latest information on various programmes and allowing high school students to experience university life and campus culture, and showcasing the characteristics of MPU and its teaching and research development and achievements. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony will be held on the same day. All high school students, parents, personnel from all walks of life and interested parties are welcome to join us in person or through the online platform.

MPU research team’s interdisciplinary academic paper published in prestigious international journal

Mu Siqing, Ph.D. student in Portuguese, Li Aoxuan and Shen Lu, Ph.D. students in Computer Applied Technology, Han Lili, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT), and Professor Wen Zhisheng, have had an interdisciplinary academic paper "Linguistic Repertoires Embodied and Digitalized: A Computer-Vision-Aided Analysis of the Language Portraits by Multilingual Youth" published by the journal Sustainability. The paper has been officially published in a special issue of the journal entitled "Technology-Enhanced Language Teaching and Learning: Innovations, Challenges, and Concerns". The journal's current impact factor is 3.889.

The e-book “Cognition, Language, Culture and Translation: a borderless and interdisciplinary dialogue” was successfully published

Recently, the e-book “Cognition, Language, Culture and Translation: a borderless and interdisciplinary dialogue” was successfully published by Macao Polytechnic University. The e-book is one of the important outcomes of the 2nd International Conference on Encounter with the Human Sciences & The 4th LinCog – International Symposium on Language and Cognition. The e-book is divided into 21 chapters and contains 21 high-quality papers. These papers are developed around the connection between language and cognition, showing the focus of interest and research results of the participating scholars.

MPU Students Achieved Good Results in the 34th Han Suyin International Translation Contest

The students of Macao Polytechnic University obtained good results in the 34th Han Suyin International Translation Contest. Among them, Liu Wenjing, a second-year student in the Master's Degree Programme in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting, won the first prize for Chinese-Portuguese Translation and the third prize for Portuguese-Chinese Translation, and Guo Yan, a second-year student in the Master's Degree Programme in Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting, won the excellence award for Portuguese-Chinese Translation.

IELTS Exam at MPU-Bell Centre of English now opens for registration

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the world's leading international test of English language proficiency, recognized by over 11,000 institutions in more than 140 countries and taken by more than three million people each year (www.ielts.org). It is the international English language standard required for education, immigration and employment in countries and regions where English is the language of communication. The new computer-delivered IELTS test will be held in early February in 2023 at the MPU-Bell Centre of English. The test format is consistent with the paper-based test in terms of question types, level of difficulty and scoring criteria, but allows for faster results for candidates.

A third-year student in the Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Bachelor's Degree Programme of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University, Lu Xiaoan, performed well and won the third prize in the final of the National University Student English Speaking Competition.

Professor of Macau Polytechnic University edits special issue of international journal to promote language teaching in the Greater Bay Area

A special issue of the Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education (APJEF) on "Translanguaging Language Policy Planning in the Greater Bay Area of China and Beyond (GBA LPP)" has been published, with Associate Professor Wen Zhisheng of Macau Polytechnic University as Guest Editor-in-Chief, and the foreword is written by Li Wei, Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of London. It is dedicated to a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis of major language policy planning in the Greater Bay Area of China and Beyond (GBA LPP) and related language measures in the classroom, using the innovative translanguaging practice in language education as a theoretical guiding framework. The studies will provide advice and suggestions for the formulation of future language policies.

Macao Polytechnic University celebrates International Translation Day

Teachers and students of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic University organized an online event to celebrate the International Translation Day. The theme of this year's International Translation Day is "A World Without Barriers", emphasizing the key role of translators in facilitating the interconnection of different cultures and languages in the world. Under the new epidemic, it is important to use technology to connect with the world in order to maintain social distance while keeping up with the times, so that translators can play their role as communicators, coordinators, and intermediaries.

MPU Academic Publishes Linguistic Handbook by Cambridge University Press

The Cambridge Handbook of Working Memory and Language, co-edited by Associate Professor Wen Zhisheng of the Faculty of Languages and Translation of Macao Polytechnic University and Professor John Schwieter from Canada, was recently published by the prestigious Cambridge University Press. Included in Cambridge University Press' renowned "Cambridge Handbook of Languages ​​and Linguistics" Series, this handbook provides a comprehensive, updated and systematic discussion of the important role of human working memory in first and second language acquisition, processing, language impairment and cognitive training for the academic community at large.

CATTI test is now open for registration at MPU

The China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) is a state-level translation professional qualification certification implemented in China for the general public. It sets out to evaluate the bilingual competence and proficiency of the candidates in interpretation and translation. It is the only language-related test included in China's national vocational qualification system. Its translation qualification certificate is jointly issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China and the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration. It is widely recognized in the job market and has become the most popular certification among industry professionals and college students majoring in translation and interpreting studies. CATTI tests 2022 will be held at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) form June 18-19, 2022.

Macao Polytechnic Institute “The 2nd International Conference on ‘Encounter with the Human Sciences’ & The 4th LinCog – International Symposium on Language and Cognition” Calling for Paper Submissions Now

With the goals of promoting interdisciplinary research in the related fields of cognition and language, and constructing a collaborative platform for academic exchanges in the human sciences between Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, mainland China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and the world beyond, the School of Languages and Translation of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (ESLT-MPI) and the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, will jointly organize the “The 2nd International Conference on ‘Encounters with the Human Sciences’ & the 4th LinCog International Symposium on Language and Cognition”. The conference is to be held in partnership with the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF), the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) and the Federal Institute of São Paulo (IFSP). It will take place online (via Zoom) from November 29th to December 1st, 2021. The theme is “Cross-border and interdisciplinary dialogue between cognition, language, culture and translation”. The conference features seven thematic symposiums on the sub-themes of “Cognition, Language Acquisition and Language Teaching”; “Cognition, Culture and Literature”, “Cognition and Translation”, “Cognition and Interpretation”, “Cognition and Computer-Aided Translation and Machine Translation”, “Cognition, Pragmatics and Superdiversity”, and “Cognition, Grammar and Discourse”. Scholars at home and abroad are cordially invited to contribute papers in related fields and to participate in the exciting conference.

MPI Launched the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters in the Hong Kong and Macao SAR Regions

Macao's ever first China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) was successfully conducted at the Macao Polytechnic Institute from June 19th to 20th. It was the very first time that Macao and Mainland China simultaneously launched this test on the same day. More than 100 candidates participated in the English and Portuguese-language interpretation and translation (level 1 to 3) test at the MPI test site. Prior to this, Jiang Ping, general manager of the CATTI Project Management Center of the China Foreign Languages Bureau, and Feng Jingyi, deputy general manager, had paid a visit to the test sites at MPI. They were accompanied by MPI's Vice President Lei Ngan Lin and the Director of the School of Languages and Translation Han Lili, and were briefed on the allocations of the test sites and the conditions of the venue, other related security and confidentiality issues, and the anti-epidemic prevention measures during the tests, etc. They also provided guidance on technical aspects of the digitalized examination.

MPI will provide training for all registered candidates

CATTI tests will be hosted by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI). The first CATTI Tests in Chinese-Portuguese and Chinese-English are scheduled to take place at MPI on June 19 and 20. To help candidates to prepare for the tests effectively, the School of Languages and Translation of MPI will provide training for all registered candidates on June 2 and June 5 respectively, and will not charge any cost. Interested candidates can log on MPI’s “language training and testing” website from May 1 to May 15 https://www.ipm.edu.mo/eslt/zh/catti.php to register and select one of the two sessions under the section of “Training for CATTI candidates”. Seats will be limited.

MPI publishes A Course in International Chinese

The Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has been forging ahead to strengthen academic disciplines, develop teaching materials and facilitate the development of language talents. Edited by Professor Lei Heong Iok, A Course in International Chinese, Elementary Level, Volume 1, has been published by the Beijing Commercial Press. It comprises a Student’s Book, an Exercise Book and a Teacher’s Book. As the first set of teaching materials on International Chinese developed in Macao and the first of its kind to present its content in Chinese, Portuguese and English, the publication of the coursebook plays a positive role in the development of International Chinese Education in Macao and the enhancement of the quality of teaching Chinese to learners from Portuguese-speaking countries.

MPI and IPIM Jointly Organised an Experience Sharing Session to Consolidate Young People's Knowledge about the Sino-Lusophone Platform

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) jointly organised the “Experience Sharing Session on Portuguese Speaking Countries” on 13th April. The event aimed to promote Macao's role as an Economic and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries, to raise awareness of the platform among the younger generation, and to encourage Macao’s higher education students to take advantage of the platform during their careers.

First CATTI Test Location in Macao and Hong Kong established at MPI

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the CATTI Program Project Management Center of the Chinese Foreign Language Publishing Administration (the Center) held an online cooperation agreement signing ceremony on March 25, 2021. Prof. Im Sio Kei, President of MPI, and Ms. Feng Jingyi, Legal Representative of the Center signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of both parties. The two parties will jointly promote the establishment of the first China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) test location in Macao and Hong Kong at MPI and hold the first Chinese-Portuguese and Chinese-English tests here in June this year, which is also the first Chinese-Portuguese test in CATTI history.

MPI Publishes Chinese-Portuguese Teaching Materials to Promote Disciplinary Development

To contribute to Macao’s success in becoming the training base for Chinese-Portuguese bilingual talents, the teaching team of the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has published five Chinese-Portuguese interpretation and translation textbooks, covering topics such as translation theory and practice, literature and Chinese traditional medicine. The Chinese-Portuguese translation discipline has witnessed remarkable developments in recent years, but teaching materials in the local context have not been catching up. These publications are valuable teaching materials which have just now filled the gaps in the fields of Chinese-Portuguese translation studies and Chinese-Portuguese translation skills.

Standing on the shoulders of giants to see future opportunities

More than a dozen Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) students from the Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Program took part in the “25th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair”, assisting interpreting work and business negotiations. The occasion, on the one hand, provided students with the opportunity to apply what they had learned and to build practical workplace experience. On the other hand, the event helped students to understand the prospects and the unique edge of Macao as a platform of business cooperation between Portuguese-speaking countries.

The School of Languages and Translation, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), celebrated International Translation Day 2020 to inculcate the spirt of professional best practices and excellence among translators and interpreters. The School of Languages and Translation, as a school of higher education training translators and interpreters, celebrates the event every year. This year, the School celebrated the event both online and offline observing the social distancing protocol, while adapting to the circumstances with technology to embody the key role of a communicator, a mediator, as well as an intermediary.

MPI and the European Commission’s Directorate-General of Interpretation Jointly Organize Interpreting Training Course

In order to cultivate Chinese-Portuguese bilingual professionals and strengthen the cooperation between the European Union and the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), the International Portuguese Training Centre for Conference Interpreting of MPI cooperated with the Directorate General for Interpretation of the European Commission (DG-SCIC) in co-organizing a "Consecutive Interpretation Intensive Training Course" from 25 August to 4 September 2020. Experienced trainers from the DG-SCIC, together with teachers of MPI, taught consecutive interpreting knowledge and skills to interpreting major students of the Master of Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpreting programme, and also provided practical learning opportunities to students online.

MPI’s MA Students Benefit from Internship & Aid the Growth of Macao “One Platform”

Between May and July 2020, the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) arranged internship opportunities for more than a dozen students of its Master’s degree programme. Students were trained at the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) (Forum Macao), and at the Rui Cunha Foundation. The training deepened their knowledge of the translation industry, improved their communication skills and enhanced their competitiveness.

The 18th Macao-wide English Speech Contest took place on Saturday-Sunday, 9th-10th November 2019. The Macao-wide English Speech Contest was established in 2002, its purpose being to promote the use of English in Macao in the era of globalisation, to encourage people from all walks of life to learn English, and to promote English language teaching.

MPI successfully held the “Translation Technology Workshop”

The Translation Technology and Translation Project Management Workshop, jointly organized by the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), was successfully held between July 8 and 17 on the main campus of MPI. Teachers from the Chinese-Portuguese and Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Programme of the School of Language and Translation (ESLT) participated in this workshop.

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) calls for applications for PhD Programme in Portuguese Studies

To align with the construction of the Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, to cultivate high-quality professionals proficient in Portuguese and to enrich Macao's talent pool, MPI is now accepting applications for admission to its PhD Programme in Portuguese Studies for the academic year 2019/2020. This programme features three research areas, including Portuguese language and teaching, translation studies, as well as Portuguese culture and literature. Applications will be particularly welcome from qualified research candidates.

MPI and SCIC co-organised the “9th Conference Interpreting Training Seminar”

In order to develop professionals in the field of interpreting in the Portuguese-speaking conferences in Macao and the Mainland China, the “9th Conference Interpreting Training Seminar” jointly organised by the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the European Commission Directorate-General for Interpretation (SCIC) was held at MPI on June 24. More than a dozen interpreters from the government departments of the Mainland and Macao SAR attended a two-week high-level, high-intensity, intensive training course in Portuguese. The organisers looked forward to strengthening the “One Belt and One Road” and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through the seminar, and to enhancing the role of Macao as a platform for exchanges and cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

In order to strengthen international cooperation in English education, Ms. Catrin Diamantino, CEO of Bell Educational Services Ltd. UK, recently visited MPI along with Mr. Adam Ennis, the China Country Manager of Bell UK. They were warmly welcomed by President Im Sio Kei and the management of MPI-Bell. The MPI-Bell Centre of English is a cooperation of 15 years between MPI and Bell UK, which has provided high quality English college courses to MPI students and teachers, as well as professional training to the wider communities in Macao and Mainland China. More than 50,000 people have benefited from these widely acclaimed programs.

MPI’s Diverse Activities Brushed Up Students’ English

The “Brushing Up Your English” activities created a campus-wide English learning environment at the Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI”) to enhance the students’ proficiency in the language. This series of activities, which was the fruitful outcome of a collaboration between the Student Affairs Office and the MPI-BELL Centre of English (the “Centre”), included an exam preparation course, an Easter party, a singing contest, a social interaction course, writing workshops, lunch gatherings and movie nights. Well received among the undergraduates, the activities not only brushed up their English but also further lightened the joyful campus atmosphere.

To enhance students’ translation competence, broaden the horizons of both faculty members and students, Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Programme of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) recently invited renowned German scholar and theorist in translation studies, Professor Christiane Nord, to give three lectures, which appealed to over two hundred faculty members and students to attend, receiving heated responses.

MPI Organised “Brushing Up Your English” Activities

In the first semester of this academic year, the MPI Student Affairs Office and the MPI-Bell Centre of English jointly organised a series of extra-curricular English activities for its undergraduates. Following the Institute’s long-standing tradition of learning foreign languages and aimed at encouraging the undergraduates to improve their English proficiency and sharpening their daily-life English skills in their leisure time, the series, entitled “Brushing Up Your English”, included an English writing competition, a Halloween English party, social English lunch gatherings, an IELTS preparation course and a course for strengthening their communicative ability in English, and all activities of the series were very well received. Some participants in those activities even took one step further and obtained the “Cambridge English Business Certificate”, an international certificate recognising their English proficiency for professional purposes.

MPI and European Commission co-organise the 7th Conference Interpreting Seminar

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) and the Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission (EC) are joining hands to organise the 7th Conference Interpreting Seminar from 10 to 21 July. This collaboration aims to nurture high-calibre talent in conference interpretation as well as train Portuguese university teachers working in Macao and the Chinese Mainland. More than ten professional translators and Portuguese teachers from Macao and Chinese universities, together with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, are attending this two-week advanced training in interpretation.

The Communication University of China and MPI engage in an exchange on the beauty of recitation

More than 30 teachers and students from several universities, including the Communication University of China (CUC), visited the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 22 May for a cultural exchange and academic sharing session. Professor Lu Jingchao, member of the national committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Dean of the School of Presentation Art of CUC, chaired a session entitled ‘The Beauty of Recitation’. Students from CUC also put on a wonderful recitation and clapper talk - tongue twister performance, receiving rounds of applause from a hundred teachers and students who were enchanted by this superb demonstration of prose and sound.

MPI launches first Bachelor’s programme in Macao for aspiring teachers of Portuguese

MPI's Bachelor's programme in Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation has successfully passed an academic review by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), Portugal. The President of A3ES, Professor Alberto Amaral presented the programme accreditation certificate and evaluation report of the Chinese-Portuguese/Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation Programme to MPI. Professor Amaral expressed his gratitude for the unremitting efforts of MPI to bring high-quality teaching standards to the students. He also commended MPI for its continuous improvement and congratulated MPI again for the international recognition of its various programmes which adhere to international standards for higher education.

MPI, Bell and New Oriental Sign Tripartite Agreement

To strengthen the English Education and enhance the training quality of English teachers in China, Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), Bell Educational Trust (Bell) and New Oriental Education and Technology Group (New Oriental) signed a tripartite agreement on 14 November at MPI. The Bell Teacher Campus Opens at MPI

The MPI-Bell Centre of English and Bell Educational Services have jointly organised the 4th Bell Teacher Campus 2016, which is held from July 11th to 22nd, for teachers of English to develop as professionals, to share ideas and meet teachers from other cultures. The series of courses this year has attracted more than 100 teachers from schools and universities in mainland China and Macao, including Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Shantou University, English School Attached to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Sanshui Foreign Languages School, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Guangdong Experimental High School, Guangzhou Yuexiu District Education Development Centre, The Chinese Educators Association of Macau and City University of Macau.

The Bachelor of Arts programme in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, offered by Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), has been positively reviewed by the Academic Quality Agency for New Zealand Universities (AQA). This marks the first degree programme in the field of translation and interpretation to be internationally reviewed in Macao. The review panel commended the programme’s teaching quality, research development and student support services. New Programme in International Chinese Language Education at MPI

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) will offer a new Bachelor of Arts degree programme in International Chinese Language Education in the 2016/2017 academic year, with the launching ceremony held yesterday (31 March 2016). MPI President Professor Lei Heong Iok noted that this is the first Bachelor’s programme offered by Macao’s higher education institutions in the field of International Chinese Language Education. Filling the gap in the higher education history of Macao, this programme will facilitate not only the development of the bilateral exchange platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries but also the implementation of the country’s ‘One Belt One Road’ strategy. This programme is open for application from now till 6 May 2016 at MPI’s admission website.

New Era of Cooperation between MPI and Bell Cambridge

A close partner of Macao Polytechnic Institute for more than a decade, Bell Educational Trust Cambridge is an internationally recognised English language institution which has contributed greatly to English language education in Macao. Recently, Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI, led a delegation to visit Bell Cambridge and received a warm welcome from Chief Executive Greg Hoile.
