Mr. Akira Kobayashi

Lino Type Font Design Director, Japan/Creative Type Director of Monotype GmbH (Company with Limited Liability). He won two grand prizes at international type design competitions and currently resides in Germany. He developed typefaces in collaboration with the master type designers Prof. Hermann Zapf and Mr. Adrian Frutiger. He also supervised the development of Tazugane Gothic released in 2017, the company’s first Japanese type family designed by the Monotype Design Studio in Japan. He has authored books on typefaces and serves as a jury member in prestigious international typeface design competitions.  

Major Awards:

•        U&lc Type Design Competition, Best of Category and Best of Show: Clifford (1998)

•        Linotype Library’s 3rd International Digital Type Design Contest, First Prize in the Text Category: Conrad (2000)

•        Type Directors Club Type Design Competitions: ITC Woodland (1998), ITC Japanese Garden and ITC Silvermoon (1999), FF Clifford (2000), Linotype Conrad (2001), and Palatino Sans (with Hermann Zapf, 2007)

Introduction：

For font design, there are suitable methods, approaches and purposes for its use. In the fonts used for the main text and the fonts used for signs, etc., there are many subtle details that are not noticeable but are sufficient to improve the readability. In the webinar, the design methods for these details and the feelings to the readers will be explained.
