To help university students to know more about the history and cultural characteristics of Macao, as well as to learn about Macao’s development process from different perspectives, the Student Affairs Office of the Macau Polytechnic Institute (MPI) organised for students to visit the Macao Museum and participate in “Taking a Walk through the Streets of Macao – Knowing about Macao”. By appreciating valuable exhibits in a close distance, strolling along old streets and visiting old shops in Macao, students were able to experience Macao’s local reminiscences and changes, and to gain a better understanding of the essence of Chinese culture and Macao’s development in modern times.

In the Macao Museum, students appreciated many exhibits, including the highly valuable postcards shown in the “Memory of the Past -- Exhibition of the Macao Museum Postcards Collection”, which depict characteristics of the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, and fully demonstrate Macao as a comprehensive and inclusive city. “Taking a Walk through the Streets of Macao – Knowing about Macao” begins with the oldest street in Macao, Rua dos Mercadores. Under the guidance of the docent from the Municipal Affairs Bureau, students visited various century-old shops, enjoyed interesting stories about the shop owners, recognised the "past and present" of the local traditional industry, and reflected on the origin of Macao’s history and culture.

Mr. Quan, who is majoring in marketing, said that from the historical relics in the museum, he realised the importance of cultural exchanges to the progress of civilization, and was proud of Macao's special advantages as an intersecting point of multinational cultures. Mr. Lee, who is a public policy PhD student, said that old shops were operated under the endeavours of generation to generation, they carried the historical memories of several hundred years, which resembled a living history book that was worth reading.

MPI has always attached importance to students’ holistic development. By organising various cultural experience activities, it is aimed to cultivate students’ sense of patriotism, understand, learn and experience history, and also to absorb knowledge and wisdom from history. Through all these, MPI works to foster pillars of society with a sense of identity, belonging and national pride in the new era.
